The owners of the 4500 Prospect Development in Peoria Heights are seeking an artist/designer to commission a custom light fixture to be placed in the main tower. Up to $15,000 commission will be awarded to the winner, which must cover costs to design, construct and install this signature feature. The tower will have multiple exterior windows and an open staircase from the first to the third floor. The light feature will be a distinctive focal point within the tower for anyone who walks or drives through the village. The competition will run through April 20th and is open to anyone who would like to submit entries. The winner will be announced on May 8th. “Defining Our Time” is a new series of talks celebrating the Peoria area’s past and looking to its future. Hosted by the Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce, the second event takes place on Thursday, March 23rd, featuring Adam White of Running Central and Sheriff Mike McCoy of St. Jude Runs as guest speakers. Seating is limited, so reservations are required. The event takes place in the Chamber offices at 5:30pm and will be broadcast live at definingourtime.com and peorialife.com.
Registration deadline for the Peoria Symphony Annual Student Concert is this Tuesday, March 28th. Thousands of students from across the region will attend the 64th annual Peoria Symphony Student Concert, Heroic Spirit, on April 28th, with performances at 9:30 and 11am in the Peoria Civic Center Theatre. The Center for Prevention of Abuse has kicked off a social-media fundraiser called “Be the Bridge.” With an unexpected deficit in state funding, the agency hopes to bridge the gap to keep its important domestic violence and family-centered shelter programs up and running. To participate, simply create and hold a simple sign with a half circle (representing the bridge) with a heart underneath and include the hashtag #iamthebridge. Donate online, share your picture online, and encourage your friends to do the same. Last week, 54 medical students from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria joined thousands across the country to learn where they “matched” to continue their path in medicine. UICOMP students matched to 16 specialties across 26 states; 20 are headed into primary care and a quarter of the class will remain in Illinois, with six matching to residency programs in Peoria. According to the National Resident Matching Program, this year was the largest match in history with 35,969 U.S. and international medical school students and graduates vying for 31,757 positions. All of Peoria’s 73 residency positions were filled.

The Peoria Area World Affairs Council will host a dinner and discussion on “Education Access for Children Living in Extreme Poverty Around the World” from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Saturday, March 25th @ Peoria Riverfront Museum
The Peoria Riverfront Museum invites people to run the planets during its Interplanetary 5K Race, 1-Mile Fitness Walk and Half-Mile Kids’ Fun Run. Participants will follow the routes of interplanetary explorers through the Solar System, from the Sun—past Mercury, Venus and Earth—to Mars and back, all along the Riverfront Trail. Saturday, March 25th @ Landmark Recreation Center
The Community Workshop and Training Center is hosting its annual Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser from 9am to noon. Individual and groups are welcome; there will be raffles and fun activities for all ages.
