Err, Ambivalence...?

We didn't know exactly what today's newsletter was going to be about. We wanted to pay tribute to Chuck Berry, but also needed to point out that despite being the Father of Rock'n'Roll, he is also a well documented creep and douchebag. So we're left feeling two conflicting emotions, and not knowing what to do about it. That's ambivalence.

Or perhaps a better example of this feeling is the announcement from Senator Fifield that the Catalyst Program is returning money to the Australia Council for the Arts from the last few years of completely screwing over the arts industry. And while, sure, it's really good that we protested our butts off, and hashtagged our friends to smithereens... all the while feeling unsupported and undervalued by most of society, leaving us in a position that is harder than ever to get money as an individual/emerging artist, let alone a small-to-medium company. Not to mention, the money that is being returned comes with a lot of less-than-subtle caveats, an outcome of less money, and the exhaustion of taking a metaphorical beating for no reason, and now Fifield is claiming credit for truly listening to the Arts Sector's thousands upon thousands of complaints all along. Or something. Urgh. So... hooray for successful protesting, but we're also angry and empty and cold.

Conflicting emotions. Ambivalence. Maybe we're not using it right. But either way, we still feel quite a lot like Wynona Ryder in this scene.

Cosmopolitan Queer

The next UNSWriting event features two emerging queer writers with stunning debut books, Anna Westbrook with her dark crime novel Dark Fires Shall Burn (2016) and Alison Whittaker with an edgy book of poetry, Lemons in the Chicken Wire (2016). The discussion will be facilitated by emerging writer, Peter Polites; author of the awesome Down The Hume.

The works and their discussion will explore queer sensibilities ranging from the underworld of Newtown in the 1940s to the gritty aesthetics of queer and trans indigeneity on the fringes of northern NSW.
