From the Principal

As I read through the material for this newsletter I realised that there is quite a sporting focus – so many achievements we want to share with you so that we all can congratulate and support our students. Participation in sport and involvement in school life beyond the classroom are key to enjoying school and learning about success, hard work, resilience, and friendship. I would like to think modern society viewed schools as so much more than 8.30 to 3.15 institutions where just content is delivered.

Recently I was lucky enough to watch the new Team New Zealand boat being rigged. As you can read in this newsletter, Hailey Regan, who is in Year 13 here at Long Bay College, recently christened the new Team NZ boat and she invited me to have look at it. The technology is incredible and yet there is a sense of “kiwi can-do” across the whole operation. Hailey’s boat can sail a whole race course completely out of the water – on foils, at about 40 knots! This project involves cutting edge coding, design, materials, athletes, management, leadership, engineering, systems… Ironically, rather than a computer being the interface between human and object to enhance effectiveness, the Cup rules require that a human interfaces between computer and boat.

I came away reminded of how we must open our children’s eyes to the many different work opportunities available nowadays, and how we need to keep changing our school so that we enhance the likelihood of our students succeeding in our rapidly changing world – the “real” world, that has no appetite for the old and traditional academic looking down its nose on vocational.

Principal

Michael Hendry

Former Long Bay College student Michael Hendry triumphed in a three-way playoff to win the 2017 ISPS HANDA New Zealand Open at Millbrook Resort in Queenstown. Michael is the first New Zealander to win the golf title since 2003.

Michael attended LBC from 1993-1997 and won the award in 1997 for Outstanding Sporting Achievement. He represented New Zealand at the Under 19 Cricket World Cup, but gave up a promising cricket career to become a golf professional in 2005.

Congratulations Michael!

Chris Westcott
Congratulations to former Long Bay College student Chris Westcott who has won Gold at the World Special Olympic Winter Games in Austria in Alpine Skiing.

Chris graduated from Long Bay College in 2012. He has been skiing with the North Harbour Club for the past six years and spends a lot of time training at Snow Planet and at the gym, although skiing down at Cardrona is one of his favourite things to do.

This is a wonderful achievement for Chris, showing that hard work and determination pays off. Well done, Long Bay College is incredibly proud of you.
Connor Bell
Year 11 student Connor Bell broke the New Zealand record at the North Harbour Athletics competition recently with a throw of 69.32m in the Boys Discus 1.25kg Intermediate event. Connor then went on to compete as part of the Auckland Regional team at the New Zealand Senior Athletics Track and Field Championships where he won Gold in the U18 & U20 Discus.

Connor defends his national title at the NZ Secondary School Championships in April and is currently on the long list to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahama’s in July. Congratulations Connor, we wish you the best of luck.
Athletics
Glorious weather and great enthusiasm helped to make the Long Bay College Athletics Day a fantastic day earlier this month. Students participated in a wide range of events and we saw some outstanding athletic ability.

About 50 students then went on to represent the Long Bay College at the North Harbour Athletics. Well done to all students involved, here are some of the results:
• Boys 300m Junior – 3rd place Robert Tarling
• Boys 4x100m Relay Junior – 2nd place (Micah Newman, Robert Tarling, TeRangi Pakai, Matthew Elliment)
• Boys 800m Intermediate – 3rd place Samuel Roberts
• Boys 400m Senior – 3rd place Marco van der Merwe
• Girls High Jump 1.35m Senior – 2nd place Amanda West
• Boys Long Jump Junior – 2nd place Micah Newman
• Boys Shot Put 5kg Intermediate – 1st place Connor Bell
• Boys Discus 1.25kg Intermediate – 1st place Connor Bell
• Boys Javelin 700g Intermediate – 1st place Rico du Toit
• Boys High Jump 1.75m Senior – 2nd place Jordan Laumatia-Drabble
Brianna Orams
Congratulations to Brianna Orams who competed at the SUP Nationals in Orewa.

The Year 12 student came first in her age group in both the Distance Race and Technical Race. Even better, Brianna was the 2nd Woman Overall for Technical and 3rd Woman Overall for Distance (17km!). Well done!
Holly Skinner
Congratulations to Holly Skinner for a wonderful performance at the National Surf Lifesaving Champs in Christchurch. The Year 12 student brought home 3 medals – one of each colour: Gold in the Under 16 Taplin Relay, Silver in the U16 Board Rescue and a Bronze in the U16 Tube Rescue. Well done Holly!
Dragon Boating

Congratulations to the Long Bay College Dragon Boating team who had a great day on the water at the Auckland Secondary Schools Competition.

There was only one second between the 5 teams in the Grand Final of the 200m Sprint. Long Bay College was the top North Shore mixed team, finishing in 2nd place, just .28 seconds behind the winners Western Springs College. The team also came in 4th place in the Grand Final of the 500m event.

In perfect weather conditions the LBC team showed incredible spirit and determination throughout the day, well done!

Volleyball
Congratulations to our Premier Volleyball Boys team who had a good win over Rangitoto Boys in their final match of the North Harbour Super League which saw them win the grade. Our Volleyball Boys Team 2 also won their final against Mahurangi College to finish up winners of the College Sport Division 1.

All of our Volleyball teams also performed well at the Auckland Volleyball Championship recently. The Premier Boys team finished fourth in the tournament – a very credible performance. The Premier Girls held onto their Premier league spot for next year, finishing in 9th place. The Girls Team 2 also finished 9th in their division.

Congratulations to Felipe Rossi and Jordan Laumatia-Drabble who both made the tournament team.

Good luck to all students heading to Summer Tournament next week.

Archery
Congratulations to Jake Martin who won Gold at the Mountain Green Double 720 for archery.

This competition consists of 144 arrows and is a world qualifying event. The Intermediate distance is 45m on a 120cm face target and there were five intermediate boys competing.

Jake won all 4 rounds throughout the day to claim the Gold medal. This is the third time in a row the Year 9 student has won this event, well done!
Hailey Regan

Long Bay College student Hailey Regan christened New Zealand's America's Cup team ahead of its journey to compete in Bermuda.

It is bad luck to have a yacht christened by a male, so the Year 13 student broke a bottle over the hull of the 2017 Emirates Team New Zealand, America's Cup Race yacht named "New Zealand", after delivering a speech wishing luck and safe travels to those who built Hailey Reganand will sail it.

"Being chosen by the team to do the honours was a once in a lifetime experience which will stay with me forever. I am truly grateful and wish the best for the team in the journey ahead," she said.

Parts of the bottle were made into a piece of artwork with the yacht's name and the launch details engraved in it, and was gifted to Hailey by Team New Zealand.

Hailey’s father Sean is the Construction Manager at Team New Zealand and has overseen the construction process, getting the boat ready to race. He was worked for the team for 12 years.

"New Zealand" leaves for Bermuda on April 11 via freight plane, to participate in the 35th America's Cup which runs from the end of May to June 27.

Rugby World Cup
Long Bay College was lucky enough to have the fantastic opportunity of hosting the Webb Ellis Trophy for a couple of hours this month. The Webb Ellis Trophy is awarded to the winner of the Rugby World Cup held every four years.

As well as having their photo taken with the trophy, students were able to participate in some fun rugby relays. A game of NZ v The World in tag rugby was also played on the field at lunchtime, the score was 2-2.

Thanks to the NZ Rugby Union and North Harbour Rugby Union for organising the visit.
Prime Minister's Visit
The Prime Minister Bill English, Associate Minister for Education Nikki Kaye and MP for East Coast Bays Murray McCully visited Long Bay College recently to meet some of our fabulous students and take a look at the damage from the fire earlier this year.

The Government has committed $4 million to rebuild the area of the Technology Block that was damaged.

Years 10 & 11
I have the privilege of being the current Director of Learning for Year 10 & Year 11. The role aims to support student learning and achievement while encompassing the promotion and celebration of the Long Bay College culture, the family feel and values.

I myself grew up in Rotorua. My older sister and I were encouraged to belong to sporting teams, choirs, the kapahaka club, community groups and have a holiday or weekend job throughout high school. My parents believed that busy teenagers kept out of trouble and balance was the key to success.

At the end of high school, I moved to Auckland to follow my passion at Elam Art School and while I continue to create artwork, from an early age, I knew that I would be a teacher. Influenced by a range of teachers I recognised that the job came with the responsibility of shaping minds and influencing futures. Not something that I take lightly.

This year some of our assemblies will address positive cyber safety and reducing bullying. Student led initiatives will hopefully keep these topics relevant and I encourage students who are keen to contact me to get involved or send me appropriate resources.

It is encouraging to see so many students who are working studiously, joining co-curricular groups and taking advantage of all the LBC has to offer. I am looking forward to recognising the achievements of these students and helping to support their learning.

Sarah Bicknell
Director of Learning, Years 10 & 11
Level 3 PED Trip

On Friday 3 March the Level 3 PED students embarked on their first ever snorkelling trip at Goat Island. The aim of the trip was to help them demonstrate and analyse risk management strategies in an outdoor education activity. Before the trip the students had to identify the potential risks and develop risk management strategies to minimise these. They then had the opportunity to not only see if they had the right strategies, but also learn new ones from our qualified instructors.

Luckily we had perfect weather conditions which allowed us to spend longer in the water and see a wide range of fish in a wonderful environment. The instructors said “this was one of the best trips they had ever been involved in, as the students were so well behaved, keen and interested in what was going on.”

Planning is already underway for the 2018 trip.

Ms Maura Unsworth
Head of Faculty, PE/Health

Tayla Alexander

Congratulations to Tayla Alexander who has been performing a series of Baroque concerts with the Auckland Youth Orchestra and had the final performance at Hopetoun Alpha recently.

The Year 12 student received the encore of the night from a hugely appreciative crowd. She also received very feedback from the Music Director Antun Piljanich, Arts Patron Sir James Wallace and Actor Raymond Hawthorne.
