Unfortunately, many parents of children with special health care needs will experience the death of their child. It is important for Care Coordinators to assist families when making decisions about hospice and palliative care as well as providing grief supports for the family.

The Affordable Care Act includes a provision that ensures children receive concurrent curative and palliative care, which is explained in this ACA update. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization also provides numerous palliative care resources to professionals and families.

We encourage you to share the supports in this article with grieving families. Family Voices Indiana specialists can also offer an empathetic ear to families who are making end of life decisions and experiencing grief.
