April, 2017

In March, the PGSC hosted the 24th annual Conquistador Cup regatta. If it's wind that sailboats want, we were over served on Sunday, too much to race in safe conditions. As Chairman of the Regatta, I would like to thank the twenty seven local skippers and six skippers that traveled from outside Charlotte Harbor to race, plus the two PGSC skippers that participated in the Parade of Sail. Also, special thanks to the members who provided their boats or volunteered for Race Committee duties and of course the Conquistadors. The Saturday dinner banquet had 130 dining on steaks, with entrants collecting door prizes throughout the fun evening. Come 2018, the Silver Anniversary of the PGSC hosting the CCR, I encourage members to come out and participate or volunteer. At present the 2018 Regatta chairman has not been assigned. Any members interesting in Chairing , co-Chairing or volunteering for the Regatta please contact me with your interest to do so as the 2018 CCR Committee is assembled.

April PGSC activities start right on Saturday April 1st as member volunteers participate in the “Great American Clean-up”. Thanks to Mike and Katrina McIntosh for heading up the team of volunteers contributing to “Keeping Charlotte Beautiful “.

Our General Meeting on Wednesday April 12th will be at the PGICA starting with a social at 6:30 followed by the meeting at 7:00 pm. Tickets will be on sale for the annual May Steak dinner, if you need tickets and are not able to attend contact VC Tom Delaney. Our featured speakers for the evening are members of our local Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 98. The program will speak to a nautical discipline often in need of improving on, anchoring. The entire presentation will focus on anchoring and include describing the different types of anchors and the bottom types to use them in..

April has three cruising options for members to consider, click on the cruise to sign up or contact co-Cruising Chairs Curt Morrison or Frank Cushing:
Matlacha Cruise - April 8 & 9
Pelican Bay April 21 to 23 themed “Sex on the Beach”  - great start point for the South Cruise.
South Cruise starts from Pelican Bay April 23. Contact Cruise Captain Curt and Debbie Morrison. A meeting will be scheduled in April for the skippers to discuss destinations.

The first weekend in April will conclude the Winter Racing Series. The four race Spring Series dates are posted on our Club’s website with the first race Sunday May 7th. With some time left before the start of the Spring Series, our Racing co-Chairs Bob Knowles and Garrett Geiger are considering a variety of formats that may appeal to our non-racing and current racing members. The Summer Series has always had a fun more casual complexion and that’s something we want to build on. If you’re not currently racing, contact Bob or Garrett if you think you may be interested.

A major challenge our Racing programs continue to face is finding volunteers with power boats that would be willing to serve as race committee boats. Again, please contact Bob or Garrett if you would like to help.

Special thanks to John and Dianne Welsh for organizing the “Pre” St Patrick’s Day party and Sea Gals luncheon at the Perfect Caper. PGSC socials are yet another way to stay or get connected with your fellow sailing members, we’ll keep you posted as more fun socials are planned throughout the watch.
