Installing a Package of Bees

A different Approach

See the video of Corwin installing a package of bees with one shake. This approach avoids having to vigorously shake the bees out of that 4 inch hole in the package that the bees come in.

When do I take off my insulation panels?

  • When do I take off my insulation panels? In climates like Colorado we have big fluctuations in temperatures in the spring. One day it is snowing and 30 degrees and the next day it's sunny and 65. Remember the insulation panels WILL NOT heat the hive, they only "insulate" the hive from the outside temperatures whether hot or cold. So , it is not a critical issue of when to take off the panels.  The insulation helps balance the extreme up and downs in environmental temperatures. You could even leave the panels on all year to insulated from hot temperatures as well. Think of a colony in a 6 inch Cottonwood tree. The thickness of the wood insulated the bees from hot summer temperatures. We wait until April to remove our panels, mainly so we can easily look into the window. Cathedral Hive Workshop
& Hive Assessment
This Saturday!

Hive Assessment & Cathedral Hive Workshops
April 1 - Boulder, CO
$35 each workshop

Register for the Bee Workshops

The Cathedral Hive Workshop is specifically geared toward examining the amazing and natural way the bees develop their nest and utilize the Cathedral Hives hexagonal cavity. The Cathedral workshop will demonstrate how the 'colony regulated venting system' works and we will get an in depth look at how the bees use the "super highway" for winter migrations through the honey stores and for their own hive nest productivity.

Join us for our seasonal "Hive Assessment" class as we search for sometimes elusive and subtle clues for why the hives collapsed. This is an amazing opportunity to observe, learn and investigate multiple hive samples with a goal of discovering the story of "what happened" and revealing the factors that lead to the death of the hive.

Bee Doctor Intensives 2017

Small group, hands-on apprenticing with Corwin Bell

  • You will have the opportunity to experience how Corwin listens to the needs of the bees and how he sustains a particular space around the hive in order to create an environment of trust.
  • This hands-on training will give each participant a vast amount of experience in understanding their own hives and give those wishing to become Bee Doctors, the confidence to go on house calls to help others with their hives. We limit the intensives to 4 people per session, so there will be a great opportunity for hands-on learning
