Changing of the guard at Local Land Services
 
NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair has signalled a ‘changing of the guard’ for Local Land Services with the announcement of 45 new local chairs and board members recently. The Chair of Chairs, Tim de Mestre, has also announced he is stepping down from his position and, as part of the evolution of Local Land Services, the role of state chair will transition to part-time. Richard Bull, a sheep producer from the Murray region has taken up the role of Acting Chair in the interim.

North Coast flood updates
 
Local Land ServicesWith a number of flood alerts in place across the North Coast, North Coast Local Land Services is providing assistance to landholders with flood-related stock or agricultural issues.
 
Regular Emergency Update e-newsletters will be sent over coming days providing landholders with news, advice and information. Landholders who need help with emergency support for their livestock, emergency fodder, stock water and other materials should contact North Coast Local Land Services on 1300 795 299.
 
 
 

 
Gearing up for local elections
 
Local Land Services is gearing up for local elections which will take place in May 2017. Ratepayers can enrol to vote until 31 March (today) and forms are available from any Local Land Services office or online.

As well, LLS ratepayers are eligible to nominate a candidate, including themselves, to stand for election to the local board. Candidate nominations close at 12 noon on 10 April. North Coast appointed board
 
North Coast LLS is governed by a board of local people. The Chair and three board members are appointed by the Minister for Primary Industries – the remaining three board members are elected by Local Land Services ratepayers. This week saw the announcement of Bob Smith (Mylestom) as the North Coast LLS Chair and Mark Bulley (Port Macquarie) and Tom Cooper (Bonalbo) as Ministerially-appointed Board members.  An announcement on the fourth ministerially-appointed board member is expected within the next month.

Wild dog breeding season
 
The autumn breeding season signals an increase in wild dog sightings, howling and attacks. Landholders affected by wild dog attacks are asked to report attacks to local biosecurity staff and to help reduce attacks either by working with existing wild dog control groups or forming new groups, if needed.

Tracking feral cats
 
North Coast LLS is working in a collaborative project studying the movement of wild dogs, foxes and feral cats around Coffs Harbour.  GPS tracking collars and remote cameras are allowing researchers to understand how these animals use peri-urban areas with some interesting results on feral cats.

Pinkeye warning
 
The North Coast LLS District Vets have issued a warning about Pinkeye in cattle on the North Coast following increased reports from livestock producers. For more information on pinkeye or vaccination programs contact your private veterinarian or the North Coast LLS District Vet team.

Securing the future of farming
 
This month's ABS national accounts included very positive results for the ag industry.  North Coast LLS has shared information about succession planning and innovative approaches to encouraging new entrants to farming.  Also being celebrated are the great sustainable agriculture results being achieved with funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.

Beetles helping with weeds
 
Beetles are not only the most dominant, species-rich group of organisms in the world they are also new allies in the fight against canopy destroying weeds. Wide spread noxious and environmental weeds such as Cat’s claw creeper pose an enormous threat to agricultural productivity and biodiversity on the North Coast and innovative approaches are being used.
