Self while drawing

This is a drawing based on a page from my sketchbook. It is done in pencil on tracing paper mounted on a panel, then covered in gesso, sanded down, redrawn, covered in gesso again, sanded down again, etc. In the course of the process the original sheet of tracing paper got fractured in many ways, and the drawing spilled over onto the board itself.

The resulting object is very different from a drawing on paper. It lives in translucent layers, feels and looks more like an ivory carving than either a drawing or a painting. The original drawing disappeared and reappeared several times during this process, is sunk deep into the surface now rather than sitting on top like it does on paper.

If I take a photograph that accurately conveys its brightness most of the image itself becomes invisible, if I take one that brings out most of the lines that are actually there it suddenly looks dark and grim, which it isn't. My scanner is completely overwhelmed by this piece. When I look at it myself I see all those things at once - a lightness, it seems white to me, but also the depth of the lines and subtle shading in the drawing, the different textures and topographies of the worked surface and its overall amazingly smooth feel.
