Join your contemporaries and fellow alumni, current students and staff for dinner and drinks at the Charterhouse on Friday 12 May. This year we will be celebrating the success of sports at Barts and The London, including recent wins such as the Merger Cup and the Rugby Club’s triumph in the Hospital Cup! This event is being organised by BATLAA in conjunction with the Barts and The London Students’ Association (BLSA) and is open to all former and current members of Clubs and Societies, as well as any other interested alumni. The School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) has built an online gallery of women in STEM Careers within higher education and research in celebration of International Women’s Day 2017. Profiles include Professor Amrita Ahluwalia (q PhD Pharmacology, Barts and The London, 1993), Dr Sadani Cooray (q PhD, Barts and The London, 2007), Dr Sandra Evans (q The London, 1983) and Professor Anne Cushing (q BDS, The London,1973) (pictured). QMUL is part of the Athena SWAN Charter to recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine .

Alumni in the Spotlight: Mr Michael Mew - an insight into Orthotropics
We were delighted to meet Dr Michael Mew (q BDS, The London, 1992) at a recent reunion. Dr Mew and his former classmates met in the Old Library to mark 30 years since they joined The London as dental students in 1987. Dr Mew is Clinical Director of The London School of Facial Orthotropics and is also a lecturer. Orthotropics is a natural non-extraction and non-surgical alternative approach to Orthodontic treatment. Find out more.
Last call for alumni of the Barts 16th Decennial Club
The Barts Decennial Club consists of those who entered Barts between 1966 and 1975 or those who qualified between 1971 and 1980. Dr Jim House (q Barts, 1975), who has been treasurer of the 16th since 1993, is keen to establish whether there is any interest in holding further meetings. If you would like to get involved or if you are in contact with past students who qualify for the 16th Decennial Club, please get in touch.

You’ve been through it - let them know there’s light on the other side!
With the exam period fast approaching our students are busy attending their final classes and preparing for their upcoming deadlines and exams. Do you remember sitting an exam in the Old Library, trying to remember the answer to a tricky question or the words of encouragement someone said? Well there is a way you can help our current students! You can email a ‘Study Tip’ (or a memory) to us and we’ll put it up around campus on our screens and in work spaces so students can see how former students approached their impending exams. Don’t forget to add your name and degree at the bottom of your message. It could be something like this:
‘Understand key terminology! Make flash cards and ask someone to test you.’ (Joe, BSc Neuroscience)
We hope this activity brings back good memories for you while wishing well another generation of students. Thank you in advance!

Become an MBBS Mentor
Since 2008, the School of Medicine has been running a mentoring scheme for Year 3, 4 and 5 MBBS students. If you would like to join the scheme as a Mentor, we would love to hear from you. Find out more about the programme or contact us for more information.
Get involved with QMUL’s Festival of Communities 2017
Taking place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 May in and around Mile End, the Festival of Communities aim to bring people together to celebrate ‘life’, exploring living and learning in Tower Hamlets. Last year were delighted that a number of alumni showcased their projects and we’d like to encourage more of you to participate this year! We are also looking for alumni to get involved with the Festival in other ways, such as helping out with the logistics of running the event, carrying out evaluation tasks and meeting and greeting. Notice about the amalgamation of the Benevolent Funds
We are pleased to announce that The London Hospital Dental Club Benevolent Fund (LHDCBF) has been incorporated into the Medical Club Benevolent Fund to form the merged BATLAA Benevolent Fund (Registered with the Charity Commission No. 229227).
The terms of the transfer state that the LHDCBF is held as a restricted fund for the purposes of relieving need, hardship or distress amongst dental alumni. ‘The object of the BATLAA Benevolent Fund shall be to alleviate financial hardship amongst past and present students of Barts and The London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, amongst past students of The London Hospital Medical College, including its School of Dentistry, and the Medical College of St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and other Ordinary members of The Association, and those dependent upon them.’ This is obviously inclusive and the benefits of the joining of the Funds include streamlining management and accounting procedures, improving flexibility and harmonising the Benevolent Fund’s activities with the corresponding association. We will continue to provide medical and dental electives, intercalated bursaries and hardship support via the Fund, sourcing the various awards from the appropriate charitable funds.
