Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome everyone to Week Nine, as our first term together nears its conclusion.
One of the highglights of this week for our children and their families, is the distribution of the Term One Work Sample Folders, representing the children’s progress in each of the Learning Areas. I’m sure as parents, you will enjoy being led through each sample with your child’s perspectives and reflections being shared. The purpose of the Folders, is to identify areas worthy of celebration, and enable you all to establish goals for the coming term. I would like to acknowledge the hard work that our teachers, Specialists and Education Assistants have undertaken to ensure the folders are prepared well.

Once again, I am compelled to remind us all of the busyness and challenges that the beginning and end of the school day presents to all, with breeze ways and drop off zones being very congested. Children are to move safely and efficiently along verandas and out of classrooms, younger children are to hold their parents’ hands near the drive through zone, and all playgrounds are out of bounds both before and at the conclusion of the school day. This is to ensure the safety of all. Some of the recent works to Harold and Mary St have presented a “grid lock” situation, and we ask for everyone’s vigilance and patience.

Learning: Learning from our experiences.
Today at assembly, the 2017 Interschool Swimming team was presented to the school community, and the children received their printed bathers and caps, in preparation for next Monday’s Interschool Swimming Carnival, conducted at Challenge Stadium.  Thank you to Mrs Stephanie Alderman (Physical Education Specialist), and our Year Six students, Isabella Troy and Matthew Maine, as captains of this year’s team, for their confident presentation this morning. As a school community, we wish all our swimmers well and await their recollections of the day. Parents are encouraged to attend to support the children.

The National Assessment Program –Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment of all students in Years 3,5,7 and 9. All students are expected to participate in the testing, when they will be assessed in language conventions, (spelling, grammar and punctuation), writing, reading and numeracy. The test results provide a snapshot of a student’s achievement in comparison to all students of the same year level across the country. They assist teachers to better identify students who require additional support or enrichment, and enable schools to identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching programmes. The 2017 NAPLAN tests will be held from 9th- 11th May, (in Week Three) of next term.
Engagement: The promotion of positive relationships with our students/staff/parents
This week, the P and F sub committee that has been formed to prepare for, and stage the 2017 Gala Cocktail event to celebrate our 120th anniversary year, met for another progress meeting. Small groups are busily planning to promote the event, engage suitable entertainment, attract sponsorship, and plan for drinks and food- for what promises to be a wonderful night out. Accompanying your child today is the first of flyers with details about the evening’ date and theme.  Special event invitations are scheduled for next term, and the P and F are very keen to hear from all past students, staff, Principals and parishioners, and you are asked to “spread the word” in this regard!  In addition, the sub Committee working on the production of our 120th year merchandise, have provided an update for all- our blue and white logo printed golf umbrellas are due for release early next term, together with the chance to pre order a special gift box of wine glasses.
Accountability: Taking responsibility for the quality of our work

Most families have completed their obligations to nominate their payment plan for the 2017 School Fees, and I thank them for their commitments and also, their recent payments towards the 2017 School and Tuition Fees. Please ensure an appointment has been scheduled with me, to discuss any variations to fee structures, or any circumstances that have the potential to impact on your family’s obligation to meet their 2017 School Fees.

Last week, the Leadership team met with our CEWA School Improvement Advisor, Mrs Eileen Climo, together with CEWA consultants, Mrs Julie Halvorson and our senior Psychologist, Ms Gabriella Guagliardo for the review of our school’s 2017 school Improvement plan (ASIP).

Discipleship: Living out the teachings of Jesus
As the Lenten season enters its fifth week, and our children from Year Three have celebrated their sacrament of Penance last week, I thought it may be timely

A Brief Examination of Conscience   Based on the Ten Commandments

I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange Gods before me.
Have I treated people, events, or things as more important than God?

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Have my words, actively or passively, put down God, the Church, or people?

Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.
Do I go to Mass every Sunday (or Saturday Vigil) and on Holy Days of Obligation? Do I avoid, when possible, work that impedes worship to God, joy for the Lord’s Day, and proper relaxation of mind and body? Do I look for ways to spend time with family or in service on Sunday?

Honour your father and your mother.
Do I show my parents due respect? Do I seek to maintain good communication with my parents where possible? Do I criticize them for lacking skills I think they should have?

You shall not kill.
Have I harmed another through physical, verbal, or emotional means, including gossip or manipulation of any kind?

You shall not commit adultery.
Have I respected the physical and sexual dignity of others and of myself?

You shall not steal.
Have I taken or wasted time or resources that belonged to another?

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Have I gossiped, told lies, or embellished stories at the expense of another?

You shall not covet your neighbor’s spouse.
Have I honored my spouse with my full affection and exclusive love?

You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.
Am I content with my own means and needs, or do I compare myself to others unnecessarily?

Christ’s Two Commandments
How well do we love God and others? Do we love as Christ calls us to? In the Gospel of Matthew, Christ gives us Two Commandments: “He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments’” (Mt 22:37-40). Not sure what love is? St. Paul describes it for us in his Letter to the Corinthians. Is this how you love God and others? “Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails” (1 Cor 13:4-8).

In closing, can I wish everyone well for our coming week, and encourage you all to join us for firstly, our Holy Week Liturgy on Wednesday morning in the Hall, when our Year Six children will enact the Stations of the Cross for all , and secondly, our ANZAC liturgy planned for Friday afternoon on the School Oval, which will be led by our Year Four children, when we will remember those who have paid the supreme sacrifice. Lest we Forget.

Many thanks and God Bless,
Mrs Tanya McGuire
Principal

Please be diligent in returning the work sample files back to school once you have looked through them and completed the parent responses. Please return all work sample folders to school no later than next Friday 7th April.

T20 BASH CRICKET
Last Thursday, 20 of our Year 5 and 6 children represented Sacred Heart in a T20 Bash Cricket competition at Charles Veryard Reserve in North Perth. Our teams played 5 very competitive games and displayed excellent batting, bowling and fielding skills.
Our girls team just missed out on winning the competition and received the Runners Up pennant. Our boys team came fourth out of six teams. Congratulations to all the cricketers who played well and displayed great team spirit.
Many thanks to Maria Devlin ( Lachie’s mum Yr 5) for her continuous support of sport at Sacred Heart. Maria umpired 4 games and without her assistance we would not have been able to compete in the event.
Also, it was great to see our parent and grandparent support at the oval.
