This is real love-not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. (1 John 4:10)

Dear Parents

THE ART OF TEACHING IS THE ART OF ASSISTING DISCOVERY
As we come to the end of a long and busy Term 1, it is important to take time out and reflect. It is something I do in both a personal, as well as a professional capacity. As a school, it is vital that we look back and reflect in order to build towards the future. Reflection has many facets. Reflecting on work enhances its meaning. Reflecting on experiences encourages insight and complex learning. We foster our own growth when we control our learning, so some reflection is best done alone. Reflection is also enhanced, however, when we consider our learning with others.

As mentioned in my title, it was Mark Van Doren who said it best: The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.

What an amazing statement. For me, this statement nails it. This philosophy of Mark Van Doren, professor of Columbia University, unites all the best findings in the area of teaching. In one simple sentence, he has expressed what a learning process should feel like for every single child. However, what exactly does this statement mean?

The best way to describe this process is to remember how you learned to ride a bicycle. Your father or mother taught you everything about walking it properly, keeping balance and avoiding falling. You were eager to try, and finally you mounted it and rushed forward. Wasn’t it one of the greatest moments in your life? Probably, your triumph went on for only a few minutes and your father was most likely running beside you, holding your bicycle. That said, it was your achievement.

This is an ideal model of how learning should be facilitated. A teacher assists in the process, but he or she never takes away the discovery component. A child should gain some knowledge through his or her own efforts. Information obtained in this way is much more valuable and better retained.

Teachers who promote reflective classrooms ensure that children are fully engaged in the process of making meaning. They organise instruction so that the children are the producers, and are not just the consumers, of knowledge. To best guide children in the habits of reflection, these teachers approach their role as that of ‘facilitator of meaning making.’ All things considered, please know that it is the aim of our teachers to assist discovery and promote curiosity within the walls of our classrooms.

I have enjoyed many positive discussions with parents this past term. Once again, I repeat the call for parents to come in and engage with us. We are in a partnership with your child and his or her well-being is central to this partnership. From personal experience, I understand walking in the front door at home to be faced with this issue or that issue from school. I always make sure that I have the facts in front of me before making a final decision.

From a staff point of view, Mrs Roberg will assume the mantle of Grade 5 Head effective Term 2. I would like to thank Mrs Joachim for her commitment to this post and we look forward to what lies ahead under the leadership of Mrs Roberg.

I would like to thank Mrs Evans for her upcoming second Orange River Experience, which runs from Friday 31 March to Tuesday 4 April. What a wonderful opportunity for your children! My thanks also go to Miss Abdulla and Mr Toro for joining in the fun and adventure. My best wishes go to Anke Smit who is getting married to Jandré Stramrood on Saturday 1 April. May you have many happy years together and I wish you both God's richest blessings.

Please note that the school photograph packs will be coming home on Friday. These will be billed to your school account as per the letter sent out on 14 February. That said, if you do not wish to purchase the photo pack, it can be returned to your child’s class teacher on the first day of next term and your account will not be debited.

Further to this is that Mrs Rehana Farmer will also be taking class photographs later this year, so you will also have an opportunity to purchase these photographs. These photographs will be available to purchase via Rehana's website, details of which will be advertised in a newsletter closer to the time.

Thank you for engaging with the teachers during the recent Parent/Teacher Meetings. I believe that these opportunities are of vital importance. I also believe that these conversations need to be ongoing as we roll out continuous assessment. In brief, continuous assessment looks at your child’s overall capabilities over a period of time whereas a Test Week provides a snapshot of a child’s ability during a very limited period of time. I do believe, supported by research, that continuous assessment provides a better way to judge a child’s level of knowledge, skill and expertise. That said, we need to prepare your children for differentiated assessment.

Please do not hesitate to continue to be in touch with staff as we collaborate in nurturing and challenging your child to be the best that they can be. Please be reminded that the Grade 6 and 7 Test Week takes place from 25-31 May. I would like to extend my thanks to the teachers for their planning and preparation for the three days of Parent/Teacher Meetings.

As we end off this term, I would like to wish each family a special Easter period whereby the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ is celebrated. May you and your family experience a wonderful rest together. Enjoy the holidays with each other. Appreciate the small things and have fun!

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER
The Grade 1s taught us a song in Chapel last Friday! “My God is so big, so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing that he cannot do.” As we look forward to a well-deserved holiday, we also prepare to celebrate the end of Lent and be reminded once again of the power of God through the death and resurrection of Jesus over the Easter weekend.

God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us. (1 John:4:9-11)

I wish you a restful holiday and a hope filled Easter.

ARTS AND CULTURE DEPARTMENT
The Arts and Culture Department strives to integrate the Art of Music, Fine Art and Drama into a powerful learning tool, but also into a “safe space” where children can express themselves at Somerset College Preparatory School.

In Class Music, various themes are incorporated into the learning themes of each grade and include current events, making the subject material both exciting and relevant.  The classes have experienced music in nature through insects, learned about music’s role in water, had the exciting task to create their own recycled instruments, and they explored music from various genres.  Through Arts and Culture, the children have learnt more about Human Rights Day, their School Song and our National Anthem. The Grade 6 and 7 classes have had the challenge of creating a music video and soon discovered that it is much more difficult than it looks! The winners will be announced at the final assembly at the end of this term.

I joined Somerset College as Head of Arts and Culture in January and we will be saying goodbye to Mrs van Wyk and Mrs Viljoen who will be leaving at the end of this term. Mrs Melissa Grace has been appointed to teach saxophone and clarinet and Mrs Sarah le Roux will be teaching Brass, Piano and the Jazz band.  Miss Christelle Leuvenninck has been appointed to take over the Junior and Senior Choirs.

The Senior Choir had a choir day at school during which they studied repertoire and got to know each other. The Junior Choir performed at a choir festival with Somerset House, Curro and Tereo. They inspired the audience with songs including “The wonderful thing about tigers’ and “You’ve Gotta Have Music”. The evening was concluded with a mass choir item aptly named – "Something Big".  Thank you to our supportive parents for attending.

To ensure that children do not miss the same period each term, a “Yellow” and “Purple” alternating timetable was instituted.  Many more systems will be put into place next term to support our music children academically. Ninety six children will be participating in the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod next term.

Arts and Culture Notice Boards have been created for news, upcoming concerts, events and general information. The boards are situated at the entrances to the Foundation and Senior Phase sections of the school.

It has been scientifically proven that learning an instrument has intellectual, social and emotional benefits. Active participation in the school’s Arts and Culture programme also ensures that our children develop into well-rounded and balanced individuals. We are fortunate to have all we need - right here!

SWIMMING: SOMERSET COLLEGE INTER-HOUSE SWIMMING GALA 17 MARCH: REPORT BY MRS ALETTA WILSON (HEAD OF PREPARATORY SWIMMING)
We held two very exciting inter house galas on 17 March.  Our first gala was for the Grade 1 to 3 pupils.  Swimmers earned a point for each event that they swam and, as a result, most swimmers (with the motivation of their teachers) swam the maximum of three races. We swam some serious races and some fun races and every swimmer seemed to get into the spirit and enjoy the morning.

The final result for the junior Inter-House gala was:  Cloetenberg in the first place with 146 points; Avontuur in the second place with 129 points and Vredelus in the third place with 110 points.

Our second gala recorded the most events ever swum by our Grade 4 to 7 pupils as they knew that house points could be gained through participation. The house captains and teachers motivated the swimmers to take part in both the fun races, as well as in the more serious events.  With positions changing throughout the gala, Vredelus finished in first place with 237 points, followed by Avontuur with 233 points and then Cloetenberg with 197 points.

When the points for both galas were combined, Avontuur came out on top with 362 points with Vredelus second with 347 points and Coetenberg with 343 points in the third place.

Well done to all the swimmers for giving their all for their houses.

HOCKEY: REPORT BY MR QUENTIN DU TOIT (HEAD OF PREPARATORY HOCKEY)
The hockey season started for the recently selected U13 Boys and Girls Touring teams last Friday afternoon when they played in the De Hoop U13 Festival at the two Maties Astro’s in Stellenbosch. Both squads played the teams from Hermanus, Beaumont, Somerset House, Paarl Gymnasium and De Hoop. In general, the 20-minute games were most competitive and the results very close. The girls lost three and won two of their matches, whereas the boys lost two, drew two and won one of their matches.

It was good to see the teams out and in action at this early stage, allowing Mr Grobler and Mr Bevan, the boys and girls coaches respectively, to work on combinations and pick up on strengths and weakness that will require work as the season progresses. Not only these players, but all boys and girls playing hockey this year, are encouraged to keep up their fitness and skills levels over the holidays as we will be starting in full force from day one of next term!
CRICKET: REPORT BY MR HILTON TORO (HEAD OF PREPARATORY SCHOOL CRICKET)
We have come to the end of a season that was successful in many ways. We managed to get most of the boys’ and the girls’ game time; our results were great and special mention is made of the U12A and U11A boys who finished the season unbeaten. Our U13A boys enjoyed hosting touring teams from the UK and recorded some good victories. We rounded off the season hosting our very own internal 6s (Wood Trophy) matches for our U13 boys. Special thanks go to Lion of Africa for sponsoring the day and to Mr Athol Wood for donating the winners trophy.
Well done to the Dragons Team for winning!
Well done to the following boys for the following achievements: (from left to right)
Dion Claassens – 4 wickets vs Strand Muslim
Matthew Martin – 45 not out vs De Hoop
Tiago Marques – 42 vs Strand Muslim
Dylan Germishuys – 4 wickets vs Hendrik Louw
Ewan Holtzhausen – 49 vs Beaumont
Nicholas Rieth – 47 vs Papplewick
Christiaan Muller – 4 wickets vs De Hoop
Matthew Scholtz – 4 wickets vs Beaumont

The boys who made 50s or who took 5 wickets will be mentioned and awarded trophies in our Sports Assembly.
MINI CRICKET
We had a long season of mini cricket matches. There was a new league format implemented by the organisers which saw our boys and girls play away most of the time and playing at different venues. We are going to review and give feedback to the organisers regarding our experience of this format. Our U9 boys and girls had an awesome opportunity to play at Newlands Cricket Ground with a few of them getting the opportunity to watch South Africa play Sri Lanka.
RUGBY: REPORT BY MR HILTON TORO (HEAD OF PREPARATORY SCHOOL RUGBY)
PRE-SEASON MATCHES
Our U13 boys enjoyed a good round of pre-season matches at Somerset House last week. Our first match was against the host school, Somerset House, whom we beat 15 – 0. These matches were round robin matches which saw us play another match straight after the first one against Danie Ackerman. This match ended 10-10. The boys were pushed out of their comfort zones in many ways as this was their first physical and contact match. We played our last match against Temperance Town which we drew 5-5. Well done to all the boys on a good start to the season.

GLENWOOD U13 RUGBY TOUR – 20-22 APRIL
Good luck to our U13 boys who will be going on a tour to Glenwood. We are very excited about this year’s Glenwood House U/13 Rugby Festival, as this is the biggest festival that they have hosted to date.

The following teams will be participating:

Blanco Laerskool, Curro Durbanville, Fish Hoek Primary, Glenwood House, Herbert Hurd Primary School, Oakhill School, Rhenish Primary School, Somerset College, St David’s Marist Inanda and St Stithians College
NATIONAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP: REPORT BY MRS KIRSTY DE KOCK (HEAD OF PREPARATORY ATHLETICS)
Daniel von der Heyden headed off to Potchefstroom this last weekend to participate in the National Primary Schools Athletics Championship. He took silver in the U10 boys’ long jump event, jumping 4,57m. He also ran the third leg of the 4x100m relay, for which the team won a gold medal. This is also the first time that any of our athletes have made it this far and have received medals. Well done, Daniel!
The Western Cape team took second place overall, with 77 medals.
GETTING TO KNOW OUR NEW STAFF
I was born in South Africa although I spent the first year of my life in Morocco, because my parents were tentmakers. I am a Christian and I go to Christ Church Stellenbosch. When I went to school I played many sports, I did very well and received provincial colours in some of the sports. In primary school I played WP tennis from Gr4 to Gr7. When I reached High School I had to choose one winter and one summer sport. It was very difficult for me to pick a winter sport, because I enjoyed both rugby and hockey and I did well in both. After the first trials I chose hockey. I love many sports, but hockey is my all-time favourite.

I went to school at Paul Roos and there I played A-team hockey from U/14. When I reached Gr10 I was captain of the U/16A team, later that year I was pulled up to the first team. That same year I played IPT Boland U/16A and made the SA-Indoor hockey team. At the end of Matric I played 60 games for the first team, played Boland IPT U/18A and first team for Somerset West Hockey Club.

I coach and would like to teach so that I can make a difference in young people’s lives. I hope to help them to face the adult world in the best possible way, and themselves will be able to also teach their children and friends what life is truly about.
