The Green Things are Here!
What relief it is to see the green come back! The weather is warmer, the peepers are singing, and the birds, so many birds! Robins, turkey vultures, bald eagles and more have been seen here at BLD farm. We have two classes this week where we will be looking at the early spring edible greens. Wild Crafting Wednesday this evening and a plant walk on Saturday.
And what a busy time it is! A collaboration has blossomed between Ashtabula County Metroparks and the Trillium Center to bring more plant-based outdoor education to the sharpest corner in Ohio. The Wilderness First Aid class will be held at Camp Peet, a boy scout camp that is now open to the public. Register for the class below!
We continue to support the community garden and other food projects at the Conneaut Human Resources Center. Leah Wolfe will be mentoring the new Community Garden Coordinator. And, finally, the CHRC and the TC are working with the local school district to enrich the curriculum with hands-on plant projects for students so that they have a better understanding of where food comes from and how it grows.

Foraging Plant Walks

Learn about foraging for wild foods, herbs, and plant-based tools with herbalist Leah Wolfe. Explore the wild plants of NE Ohio/NW PA. We will meet monthly to see what's blooming through the seasons. In April, we will be identifying early spring edibles and spring ephemerals. Plant walks are free! Donations to support community education are welcome and graciously accepted.

Wilderness First Aid
April 22-23, 10 am-6 pm
Why wilderness first aid vs. a regular first aid class? Here are a few reasons why wilderness first aid is a good idea.
- The wilderness approach is more adaptable to rural areas and disaster situations where resources may be scarce or far away.
- Wilderness protocols are easy to integrate with natural healing and herbal first aid.
- The wilderness training is challenging and stimulating.
- Much of the training is outside using realistic scenarios to help you feel more prepared.
- The wilderness first aid kit list is more comprehensive than the average first aid kit list.
- Class size is small to ensure that each student gets attention during the training and scenarios.

Herbal Field Intensive
Save the Date - June 2-5
Immerse yourself in the wilder aspects of herbalism, spend a weekend in the woods learning about plants.
Herbalist and educator Leah Wolfe, provides a hands-on introduction to wild foods and medicines. Explore the ethics and methods of foraging, herbal actions by taste, and methods for preparing and storing herbs. Identification and use of 5 native and naturalized plants will be emphasized.

Wild Crafting Wednesdays
6-7:30 PM
People often ask, “How exactly do I go about gathering my own herbs? How much can I gather? What part of the plant do I use? When do I gather it? How do I store it?” Wild Crafting Wednesdays will help you figure all of this out.
On the last Wednesday of each month, Leah Wolfe, community herbalist and health educator, will venture out with a small group to gather plants. These classes focus on one plant so that participants can deepen or advance their understanding of plants as medicine in the tradition of Western folk herbalism.
Class fee of $15 includes sample to take home. Locations change depending on the plants in season. Tonight we meet at BLD farm in Conneaut.

Herbalism was once an important part of agrarian culture often using herbs to augment food and heal the mind, body, and spirit. Learn to integrate herbal remedies into daily life with wild weeds and herbs to heal and nourish. This series is brought to you by Leah Wolfe of the Trillium Center and the Ashtabula Local Food Council. Community Herbal Intensive 2018
The Community Herbal Intensive is a 9-month educational program for wilderness and plant lovers who want to make a connection between nature and health. In a hands-on environment, you will learn how to:
- identify wild plants
- gather plants ethically and sustainably
- process and store herbs and wild foods
- use herbs to heal and nourish in a traditional framework
- use 45+ herbs effectively and safely
- develop projects to improve well being for your family and friends
People who finish the CHI 1 are eligible for CHI 2 and to apply for the apprenticeship program. Class meets monthly and provides materials and guidelines for home-study. Fee of $875 includes book, supplies, materials, and hands-on experience for 9 months of education.
