Initiative Funding 2017 – our funding call is now open!

Calgary Learns invites you to bring forward your visions for new curricula, resources, pilots or research that will enhance the experience of adult Calgarians in foundational learning settings. As we noted in the March 2nd issue of The Connector, the province has increased our 2017-2018 grant. This enables us to more than double the funding available for this initiative round as compared to previous years. We welcome your creative ideas!

Proposals are due June 1, 2017 for initiatives in the July 1, 2017/June 30, 2018 grant term. Funding supports one-time projects to a NEW grant maximum of $25,000. See the Initiative Funding page on our website for full details.

Ensure your initiative is a fit – please contact Grants Coordinator Jeannie Finch 403-266-6444, ext 2 before starting your application.

Get feedback on your draft proposal – book a Proposal Preview
We invite applicants to meet with Jeannie Finch to preview a draft of your Initiative proposal prior to submitting the final proposal on June 1. Contact Jeannie to arrange a Proposal Preview the week of May 15 – 19 and email her a draft of your proposal 3 to 5 days prior to your meeting.

Literacy & Learning Symposium bursaries - don't miss out!!

The Literacy and Learning Symposium is a wonderful opportunity to learn from leaders in the field and colleagues from around the province. The Community Learning Network will be hosting this symposium in Edmonton on September 25-29, 2017. Check out their fabulous line up of sessions: www.calp.ca/symposium/program/at-a-glance.html

Calgary Learns would like to support our organizational members to attend this professional development opportunity through bursaries. There will be limited number of bursaries available. We will cover the symposium registration and hotel nights. Please fill out the application form prior to April 30 and we will notify you by May 19 if you are a bursary recipient: https://goo.gl/forms/zXlSJKQ0nViPXr7q1

NOTE: bursaries are for staff working within our Calgary Learns funded programs only.

Influence the Future

As announced earlier this month, Calgary Learns has received funding from the province to hire a Resource Person to support adult foundational level programming through professional development. We are looking for input from our funded programs to help shape this role to best meet community needs. On May 3rd from 1-4pm, we will be inviting program coordinators to help us create a professional development model. Invitations will be sent early next week to each organization. We hope to have your organization's voice at the table to influence the future of the adult foundational learning field.

  • 1:00 - 2:45 PM       Professional Development for Facilitators: Introduction to L.I.F.E. (Learning is for Everyone)
Join Dr. Anne Price from CanLearn Society for an engaging introduction to L.I.F.E. training*. Although adult foundational learning practitioners are not qualified to diagnose learning disabilities, it is important to understand, recognize and support the unique learning challenges and needs of these learners. Learning disabilities affect at least 10% of Canadians. More than 50% of these experience difficulty in learning to read. Learning disabilities (LD) are recognized as a lifelong neurological disorder. It is estimated that at least 30% and possible as many as 60% of adults in literacy and foundational learning programs have learning disabilities.
(*note: the full training session will take place on June 19 & 20)

  • 3:00-3:30 PM       Calgary Learns’ AGM

  • 4:00-6:00 PM      The LOLAs (Life Of Learning Awards)
The LOLAs celebrate and honour the contributions and accomplishments in Calgary’s adult learning field. The LOLAs are presented to outstanding educators, programs, supporters and learners to recognize their dedication and spirit. They highlight the value of foundational learning and the differences education makes in our community.
