Congrats to Wild Teams at Richmond!

Three Washington Wild teams traveled to Richmond, BC this past weekend for the 20th Annual Richmond Ice Classic Tournament and represented their sisters, teams and the association well!

19U Rep A team faced tough competition against Cowichan, Vancouver and Surrey. The team racked up the shot counts, made beautiful passes, beat the goal posts black and blue, and finally closed out their season by defeating their friendly rivals, the Richmond Ravens, 3-2. Fantastic season, ladies—we’re proud of you!

10U team went 2-2. They stepped up to play in the highest bracket for the first time – and realized they could compete at that level. We were impressed as they faced off against well-established all-girl teams in Canada. Each player show a lot of pride and character as they worked together as sisters do be so successful!

The 8U team also played up a division and did well in each game. Several different players stepped up to have stand-out performances in different games. Everyone battled hard, excelled, improved in their play and had a lot of fun!

We are particularly proud, as always, when our players support their sisters! It is what makes the association so special and a wonderful Wild Family! Go Wild!

Congrats to Former WWFHA Players in College Playoffs!

Congratulations to these former Washington Wild players who achieved something special with their teams this year!

Lydia Grauer plays for the NCAA D1 St. Lawrence University, who made it to the elite eight in the NCAA D1 National Championship Tournament, dropping to a tough Boston College team.

For the NCAA D3 National Championship, Meghan Kraus won the NCAA D3 National Championship title with her team Plattsburgh State as they rallied from behind to defeat Adrian in overtime 4-3.

Senior Bailey Ingalls plays for University of Massachusetts, who made it to the semi-finals of the ACHA D1 National Championship tournament before losing to the #1 ranked team Liberty 1-0.

We are proud of all your hard work, dedication and passion on and off the ice!

Expert Edge

Is your 10U player tippy and unstable on the ice? Even though their skates are brand new and offer excellent ankle support, does your child seem stiff and rigid?

Skates do offer much more support today than 20, 30 or 40 years ago. They are well manufactured and lightweight. Years ago, we used to put hot water in them, poor it out, put them on, and walk around the house in our skate guards doing deep knee bends to break them in. Things are a little different today, and in some ways, not necessarily better, but we’ll get to that shortly.

Ask WWFHA

Q: What’s happening to my player when she goes through a growth spurt?

A: We might like to think of progress in life as linear, but often it’s not. It comes in a series of bursts and slowdowns, gains and setbacks.

This is true at any age, but it’s particularly true for kids – especially those nearing their teen years. Physical growth, cognitive growth and social growth can be a difficult, even painful progression.

“There’s what parents think and what actually happens – a straight line vs. a squiggly line,” said Ken Martel, technical director for USA Hockey’s American Development Model. “Sometimes it’s forward, up, down, backwards. What we’re looking for is that, over time, there’s an upward trajectory. But if you look at things in any short run, you’re going to see wide disparities”.

That’s largely due to the fact that kids grow and mature at different rates. Growth spurts, early or late bloomers and a range of other factors can have a major impact on development, particularly between the ages of 12 to 16 in boys and 11 to 15 in girls.
