Community Gardens in and near to Millcreek 

SALT LAKE COUNTY. Springtime is here, and it's time to think about planning and planting your garden. Underutilized parks in Salt Lake County are often used for community gardens.

There are several community gardens in Millcreek, including one in the Scott Avenue Park at 3475 South 800 East. There are at least ten spots in the Scott Avenue Park garden currently open for local gardeners.

Other nearby locations include the Mt. Olympus Community Garden at 27th East and 45th South, the Canyon Rim Community Garden at 27th East and 29th South, and Harmony Park at 3700 South Main Street.

You can find out more information here at the County's urban farming program. You can also submit an application to create a new community garden in a park near you. Ready... set... start your gardens!
 

Millcreek Residents Participate in Disaster Games

HERRIMAN. Last Saturday, several Millcreek residents participated in The Whole Community Disaster Simulation Game. This event is sponsored periodically by Salt Lake County and the Red Cross. Participants get a small taste of what is involved in coordinating relief efforts following a catastrophic disaster.

Each “player” was given a profile scenario, covering the spectrum from victims to relief workers. They were then divided into groups and given action instructions directing their interactions. Throughout the simulation, the instructions were updated to introduce new and unexpected situations.

Our residents learned the importance of personal and family preparedness. Some of what they took away: "Pets will most likely not be allowed in shelters, so we must plan on how to take care of family pets." "We should have extra prescriptions filled to save for disaster, and a first aid kit quickly available." "Our family needs to create and then agree upon a plan."  

What can we do as citizens to prepare ourselves to be as self-sufficient as possible?
Millcreek residents Joe Hales, Tim and Rhonda Bachman, Eileen Ridgeline Grace, Mark Mumford, Kathy and David Graves, and Milcreek City Councilmember Cheri Jackson, participate in games disaster simulation. 
Please don't put plastic grocery bags or other filmy plastic (like laundry bags) into your recycling bin. They jam up the sorting equipment. Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling asks you to recycle them at the grocery store!

Public Comment Policy and Procedure: The purpose of public comment is to allow citizens to address items on the agenda. Citizens requesting to address the commission will be asked to complete a written comment form and present it to the acting city recorder. In general, the chair will allow an individual two minutes to address the Council. A spokesperson, recognized as representing a group in attendance, may be allowed up to five minutes. At the conclusion of the citizen comment time, the chair may direct staff to assist the citizen on the issue presented; direct the citizen to the proper administrative department(s); or take no action. This policy also applies to all public hearings. Citizens may also submit written requests (outlining their issue) for an item to be considered at a future council meeting. The chair may place the item on the agenda under citizen comments; direct staff to assist the citizen; direct the citizen to the proper administrative departments; or take no action.
