Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Grant Awarded

We are excited to announce that one of our projects has received a grant from the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. Ten Strands, as the project’s fiscal sponsor, has been awarded a three-year, $3.1 million grant to fund and manage the work of the 30-person Environmental Literacy Steering Committee, charged by Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson with implementing the most strategic, leveraged, and scalable priorities in A Blueprint for Environmental Literacy (Blueprint).

Specifically, the Steering Committee is focused on: integrating environmental literacy into existing California education initiatives (e.g., instructional materials, professional development, and assessments); re-envisioning and scaling-up the California Regional Environmental Education Community (CREEC) Network; facilitating and scaling effective school district partnerships based on the Bay Area’s ChangeScale model; the integration of environmental literacy into Local Control Accountability Plans (LCAP); and communicating success stories and best practices to build the field and establish broader support for our work. Will Parish, Founder and President of Ten Strands, and Craig Strang, Associate Director at the Lawrence Hall of Science, are the Co-chairs of the Steering Committee and Karen Cowe, CEO of Ten Strands, serves as Project Director.

We are deeply grateful to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation for its generous and highly strategic grant to leverage California’s public school system. This grant will ensure that every student has the opportunity to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to make informed decisions about the environmental issues facing their world, and are able to participate fully in California’s green collar economy. Ten Strands looks forward to updating you on the progress of the Steering Committee and its implementation work.

We are also pleased to announce that the Environmental Literacy Steering Committee has been recognized by the Green Schools National Network and the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council as a 2017 Green Schools award-winner. Senate Bill 424: Environmental Literacy Legislation

Strengthening the California Regional Environmental Education Community (CREEC) Network to full capacity is a key element in bringing environmental literacy to all of California’s students as called for in the Blueprint. As a part of this initiative, Ten Strands is currently sponsoring Senate Bill 424, which would secure permanent state funding for the Network. (Please note that all of our advocacy work falls within the limits of what 501(c)(3) nonprofits can engage in.)

During the past month we have engaged in a campaign to secure letters of support for the bill. Letters have already been received or promised from more than 60 organizations and individuals, including: Dr. Jane Goodall, Michael Pollan, the California Academy of Science, the Exploratorium, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, NatureBridge, Alliance for Climate Education, the Biomimicry Institute, Grades of Green, Earth Day Network, the Trust for Public Land, the Union of Concerned Scientists, Interfaith Power & Light, and others. If you, your organization, or anyone in your network would like to offer letters of support, please contact Ariel Whitson for templates and assistance.

We also ask that you consider signing and sharing this petition to garner grassroots support for SB 424.

Many thanks to the individuals and organizations who have submitted letters of support—each and every one makes a difference in our efforts!
