THREE DAYS UNTIL THE GLOBAL MEETING

With only three days left until the Global Meeting in Malaysia, we are proud to announce that we will be joined by more than 200 members from 70 different countries. There will be world-renowned speakers, excellent learning opportunities featuring best practices from around the globe, and of course, plenty of opportunity for networking. See the agenda HERE.

Two key elements of the Global Meeting will be the kickoff event for UNGRSW in a nearby local community and the signing of a Malaysia Declaration calling for greater commitment to road safety.

The event will also feature an awards ceremony, including a special award presented by FedEx, to recognize Alliance members who have a results-oriented commitment, are involved in the growth of the Alliance, and show willingness to learn.

It is going to be a fantastic event, which will inspire your work, build your skills and confidence, and enable you to meet with other NGOs, global organizations, and corporations from around the world.

FOURTH UN GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK: SAVE LIVES — #SLOWDOWN

UNGRSW will take place 8–14 May 2017. The theme is speed reduction and features the slogan “Save Lives — #SlowDown.” Statistics show that a 5% cut in average speed can result in a 30% reduction in the number of fatal road accidents. You can read more about strategies for reducing speed in WHO’s new summary publication Managing Speed, which has been released ahead of UNGRSW, HERE

UNGRSW offers a springboard for creating lasting change toward slower speeds. In urban areas around the world, Slow Down Days will be a key component of UNGRSW’s activities at local levels. WHO have published a toolkit with advice on how to organize and host a Slow Down Day, and the Alliance has grants available for members for this purpose. Read more about the grants BELOW and access the toolkit HERE.

Don’t forget to register your Slow Down Days and other UNGRSW activities HERE. Sharing information about your event can help inform and inspire others and will facilitate coordination of events in the same city or country.

Today is the closing date for the Alliance’s UNGRSW photo contest. Email your last-minute entries to admin@roadsafetyngos.org.

For more facts, campaign ideas, and resources, see the UNGRSW website HERE.

GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR SLOW DOWN DAYS

The Alliance has grants available to enable Alliance members to organize Slow Down Days within their communities for UN Global Road Safety Week.

Grants from US$100-2000 are available, and priority will be given to proposals that actively use the WHO Slow Down Days toolkit, clearly outline objectives and plans, involve media, and report back on the day.

Proposals must be submitted no later than 18 April 2017, at midnight GMT. Click HERE to find out more about the criteria and how to apply. Access the toolkit HERE.

NEW ONLINE WORK-RELATED DRIVING RESOURCE

Approximately 30% of road traffic accidents in the UK and the US involve work-related travel. At least 25% of work-related deaths in Europe, the US, and Australia are due to motor vehicle crashes (statistics from ASIRT and the European Commission). Therefore, interventions that target businesses and people who drive for work in any capacity are important for making roads safer for all.

Alliance member the Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport (EASST), in collaboration with Cranfield University and IRU Academy, has recently launched an online course aimed at businesses and employees. The course includes online video lectures, quizzes, real-life examples, and case studies to give managers the competencies and skills they need to safely operate vehicle fleets. At the end, they receive an accredited certificate of completion. Alliance members may find the course useful for assisting their dialogues with local businesses and building the business case for safe work vehicles. Read more about the EASST Academy HERE

MEMBER FEATURE: SEED PROGRAM FUNDS MEDIA CAMPAIGN IN TANZANIA

Stories are a powerful way of raising road safety awareness. In a recent project, Alliance member Amend Tanzania worked with journalists to encourage popular tabloid newspapers in Dar es Salaam to publish stories about road victims. The subsequent evaluation showed that the project reached a large number of people, did not cost much and is easily replicable.

Amend found road victims who were willing to tell their stories and connected them with journalists. Stories focused on the long-term impact of the victims' injuries. Amend tracked the impact of these stories by interviewing randomly selected people in the city's low-income areas.

The interviews found that of 80 people surveyed, 37 read the relevant newspapers, 17 remembered reading a story about a road crash victim, and 13 could remember specific details. Most importantly, those 13 said that they would change their behavior as a result. Read more HERE.

The project was funded by the pilot phase of the Alliance Seed Program, supported by FedEx, which gives small grants to member NGOs to implement innovative, small-scale projects that have the potential to be replicated. Amend Tanzania’s project is a great example of this: it uses simple steps that can be easily reproduced by other NGOs. Read more about the Seed Program HERE. A new round of Seed Program grants is planned later this year.
