A Word from Our Chair

IT IS STATE MEET TIME! We are looking forward to seeing you at the GRIN State Meet on April 8 & 9th! Munster has worked hard to prepare to show off their wonderful facility and amazing volunteers. Join the fun at the meet, get to know some new friends, and make that winter hard work pay off! Our Annual Meeting is also happening at the meet and we look forward to your input and ideas!

Remember, April is Adult Learn to Swim Month! I challenge you to get one adult non-swimmer in the water this month! YOU can save a life, by helping an adult gain the confidence to get in the water and learn to swim! Click on Adult Learn to Swim for programs near you!

Swimming for fitness? Yes, we all are! Whether you are just leaning to swim, a triathlete, a previous high school, or collegiate swimmer, US Masters Swimming has a place for you!  We are all trying to stay healthy, live a healthy lifestyle, and swim for life. So, let's spread the word that US Masters Swimming is for ALL adult swimmers.

While you're at it, please make sure that you and your teammates are all registered with USMS. Joining USMS is easy and you can join USMS online. Among other benefits, this membership helps protect your team, your facility, and your coaches by providing liability insurance that covers us all when we're in the water. All it takes is one unregistered swimmer to place the entire program at risk. Please be sure that person is not you.

See you in the pool!

Swimmingly,
Lisa L. Brown

A Word from our Fitness Chair

You’re in the pool feeling great and just beginning your kick set when you suddenly get a foot cramp. Ugh! There goes the morning’s workout. Sound familiar? Many of us are plagued with cramping problems. Usually the feet and calves cramp, although the hamstrings may also be involved. This problem can occur whether or not we are in shape. However, it more commonly occurs when we are getting back into shape after taking a break from the pool.

The two biggest causes of cramping are dehydration and fatigue. Dehydration can play a big roll in cramps, so this means drinking fluids before, during, and after our workouts is critical. Always have replacement fluids on deck and take small sips of fluid during your workouts. Fatigue can cause cramping, so get plenty of rest and always try to stretch before getting in the water.  This is especially important when doing open water swims.

Just a little knowledge and planning can help keep cramping at bay. Please let me know if there are topics you'd like to learn more about. Don't forget to share your goals with me (rongatte@hotmail.com) and I will help keep you on track.
