Design a Game monthly newsletter

Hi All!

Here is your monthly dose of ideas around applied games, learning and game design research.

Gamification is bullshit?
I’ve been asked several times recently about what is meant by "gamification is bullshit" and why I agree with most readings of that – here is the original piece by Ian Bogost, and if you want the updated full version get this book:
The Gameful World: Approaches, Issues, Applications (MIT Press) as it contains that and several gems, starting from Deterding’s introduction. I just will add a point for reflection: what do you want from your customers, loyalty or respect?

Applied games theory & design
I have recently been thinking about the variety of ways games can teach – one modality is game play “pauses between attempts”, my post on Gamasutra: In Between Spaces And Their Design.

Defining game design is never easy: I like the operational definition that goes under the name The Door Problem, and I tried a visualization for my workshops here.

A guy that knows what he is  saying when talking about applied games is Sebastian Deterding – read this for the state of gamification and its results: The maturing of gamification research.

Applied and persuasive apps for museums
Here are the slides of my recent talk on Applied And Persuasive Applications For Museums at the Museum Digital Transformation conference.

Applied games on unlikely themes
In Open Lab Games we are working on a game for learning about offshore platforms safety measures, here is a trailer: Offshore Safety.

Simply unlikely games
Have at most 10 free seconds for playing? Here is a wonderful little game play experience that will climax quickly: Queers in love at the end of the world by Anna Anthropy.

Producing applied games
A while ago I wrote with Massimo iacolare a piece about the problematic task of estimating games: it keeps getting a lot of attention on Medium, so maybe its worth a read :-)

Book Explaining With Games
I'm writing a book on applied games, but its a slow progress because I’m working a lot on the development side of applied games, in particular on the Feel Better application for kids in long term therapy which will get a preview soon (links and explanations in next issue).
A pre pre preview of the book is always on Leanpub (an online service for publishing in-progress books) here.

If you have requests and suggestions just send a tweet to @ppolsinelli. Hear you soon - for sure next month :-)

Pietro
