DAY 33–Sabbath
You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night.
   You have scrutinized me and found nothing wrong.
   I am determined not to sin in what I say.
I have followed your commands,
   which keep me from following cruel and evil people.
My steps have stayed on your path;
   I have not wavered from following you. (Psalm 17:3–5 NLT)

With Easter two weeks away, it would be all too easy to coast the rest of the way and finish out this season of Lent content with the spiritual disciplines we have practiced. Instead, this is the time to press deeper into these practices. Use this Sabbath rest as a time of renewal. Read Psalm 17. Pay attention to which actions are attributed to David and which are attributed to God.
It is not just a question of giving up sin, but of giving up my natural independence and self-assertiveness, and this is where the battle has to be fought. It is the things that are right and noble and good from the natural standpoint that keep us back from God’s best.
