Book Launch: Changing Tides

Vanishing Voices of Nikkei Families and Their Families

Saturday, April 22
1:00pm – 3:00pm

Venue: Steveston Buddhist Temple, 4360 Garry Street, Richmond, B.C.

The book is a collection of personal stories of Japanese-Canadian fishermen and their families on the B.C. coast from before the Second World War to the present day. Some of the stories are conversational recollections, some are the result of interviews and others are an individual’s personally written recollection. There are stories of hardship, determination and triumph; others provide a personal perspective on the injustices, discrimination, and racism encountered and how they persevered to overcome these setbacks. Above all, they illustrate the enduring bonds of family, community, and culture. These stories, accompanied by family photographs, capture a fading way of life. They are a tribute to the Nikkei fishermen and their contributions to the fishing industry, to the communities where they lived, and to Canada’s rich multicultural heritage.
Books will be available for a special book launch event price, $30 including tax.

Sunday Family Corner

Free drop-in program for families, inspired by gallery exhibits and seasonal Japanese events. We provide Japanese traditional toys to play with as well as teach origami. Every month we introduce a special craft to create in relation to the gallery exhibits.

Sunday, April 23, 12-4pm

This month’s activity is inspired by Cindy Mochizuki’s Rock, Paper, Scissors exhibition. In the chapter Scissors which is set in the future – the year 2100, there lives a 30′ Giant in a tatara steel factory. He is friendly and makes the sharpest scissors, which he uses to cut holes in time. The Giant likes to hum and sing, and he likes mandarin oranges and stinger fish! What might he look like? Using water and ink, let’s create a magical giant.
This program is generously supported by Opus Art Supplies.

EXHIBITION

Rock, Paper, Scissors

by Cindy Mochizuki

Closes April 30

Conversation with Cindy Mochizuki and Curator Makiko Hara: Saturday, April 1, 2pm. Admission free.

Rock, Paper, Scissors is a multi-media installation comprised of radio drama, video/animation, and sculpture. Upon entering the hauntingly mysterious space of K’s restaurant, one is led through an immersive time-travel to sites off the shores of Yonago, Japan to the islands of British Columbia. Spanning the 1900s – 2100, this 60 minute installation invites audiences to experience an immersive trilogy of short stories. Each short story bridges a connection between Canada and Japan by way of early Japanese migration and the natural resources of coal, lumber, and iron.
In 2017, as we enter Canada’s 150th year, and the 75th anniversary of the internment of Japanese Canadians, this exhibit imagines the complexity of history through a transpacific, speculative fiction. Supported by BC Arts Council, Province of BC, and City of Burnaby.

Canada 75

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of Japanese Canadian internment, each month in 2017 the Nikkei National Museum will display at Nikkei Centre a different front page from a 1942 issue of The New Canadian, the English-language Japanese Canadian community newspaper which was published from 1939 to 2001. Additional issues of The New Canadian will be featured on the museum’s Facebook and Twitter accounts with the hashtag #Canada75 . Visit the centre in person or on our website to see each month's featured front page. For more information: http://centre.nikkeiplace.org/canada-75/

Japanese culture has a strong sense of privacy and decorum which sometimes makes it tough to find out, let alone tell the truth of women's lives. This writing workshop guides women and men of Japanese heritage through the process of writing the life story of their mothers with lots of discussion on the particular challenges of growing up Japanese.

The simple writing template developed by My Mother's Story, will give you permission and the opportunity to ask the questions you need to create a compelling and entertaining record of your family history.

Marilyn Norry creator of My Mother's Story, co-leads with Kimiko Suzuki food writer for Shinpo and Japanese cooking instructor, offering instruction and discussion in both English and Japanese.
