Committee Announces Implementation Updates on the 11 Recommendations from the Black Student Experience Task Force
Quarterly Updates Will Be Released Over the Next Three Academic Years

The implementation committee of students and leaders from Institute Diversity, Office of the Provost, Student Life, and Undergraduate Education announced updates on its progress to address the 11 recommendations from the Black Student Experience Task Force that will help ensure a welcoming, inclusive campus. Quarterly updates will be released until the end of the 2018-19 academic year.

As part of a three-year process, implementation of the 11 recommendations started in August 2016. These recommendations are grouped into four categories: programs, trainings, physical spaces, and planning and assessments.

“After discussing with the committee, we expanded the implementation of two areas from the original 11 recommendations of the Black Student Experience Task Force – Challenge and FASET,” said Archie Ervin, vice president for Institute Diversity. “The implementation committee identified broader and more long-term academic issue areas beyond the Challenge program and orientation processes beyond the FASET program as it relates to diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Committee Announces Implementation Updates
on the 11 Gender Equity Initiatives

Quarterly Updates Will Be Released Over the Next Two Years

The implementation committee of faculty and staff from the Office of the President, Institute Diversity, Faculty Affairs, and Human Resources announced updates on its progress to implement the 11 Gender Equity Initiatives.

As part of a two-year process, implementation began in August 2016. The initiatives emerged from President Peterson’s listening sessions on inclusiveness and gender equity in 2015 following feedback from faculty and staff that some of the Institute’s collective actions, practices, and policies fell short of fully recognizing women’s contributions.

The Gender Equity Initiatives are grouped into four impact areas: hiring, promotion, and tenure; professional and leadership development; leadership appointments; and recognition and increased visibility of the Institute’s commitment to gender equity.

“I applaud the work of the implementation committee to promote gender equity policies and procedures and celebrate the contributions of women in the Georgia Tech community,” said Archie Ervin, vice president for Institute Diversity. “We look forward to implementing the next phase of initiatives in the year ahead.”

Nearly Three Hundred Faculty Participate in
Implicit Bias Workshops to Date

Additional Workshops to be Offered During Fall Semester

According to Mahzarin R. Banaji, professor and chair of Harvard University’s Department of Psychology, “Even the most well-intentioned person unwittingly allows unconscious thoughts and feelings to influence apparently objective decisions.”

Implicit biases affect almost every aspect of daily life, and are quickly becoming the focus of programs within academia and industry. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that 50 percent of large U.S. companies are expected to offer unconscious bias training for their employees in the next five years.

Georgia Tech’s Institute Diversity, in collaboration with the ADVANCE Program, began offering Implicit Bias Workshops — designed for faculty who serve on reappointment, promotion, and tenure and faculty search committees — in fall 2015.

Princeton Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Summer Research Experience
Apply By April 15

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Summer Research Experience (MAE SRE) provides the opportunity for non-Princeton undergraduates to explore research opportunities and gain experience that is not part of their regular undergraduate curriculum. Students work with MAE faculty on a project of mutual interest and gain exposure to the different types of research being pursued in the department. The program is open to nonPrinceton undergraduates who have completed their sophomore or junior year. The program is targeted towards members of groups in the United States who have traditionally been underrepresented in engineering and applied sciences, including women. We seek such students who wish to pursue the higher education and research necessary to prepare themselves for study in engineering and the applied sciences. Our goal is to provide a research experience for potential young scientists to make very strong applications to the best graduate schools.
