Spring Morel Foray
Online Registration Is Now Open

It is almost time for the Cascade Mycological Society Morel Foray Weekend. We will be returning to Southern Oregon as it seems to be one of the more reliable areas for Morels in Oregon.  We did find Morels last year, but believe we went a little too late in the season. So, this year we are planning on May 12th to May 14th (Mother’s Day). CMS Board Member, Pavel Gubanikhin will host the weekend.

The actual guided foray will be on Saturday May 13th from 9:30am to 4pm, and will be lead by CMS member Mike Potts. Mike is a man of many talents, who coincidentally lives in Talent, Oregon, and has studied fungi and their habitats in Southern Oregon since 2007. CMS first met Mike when he submitted several of his mushroom photographs to the 2014 CMS photo contest and won with his photo titled “Coexist”. Mike joined CMS after participating in the Mushroom Art Exhibit CMS sponsored last fall. In addition to his love of photographing the natural world, Mike is an avid mushroom hunter and is considered to be an expert in mushroom identification in Southern Oregon. He has taught classes and lead forays for the Siskiyou Field Institute and the Northwest Nature Shop. He was also one of eight mycologists who lead 6 teams of citizen scientists in Bioblitz 2016: Fungi at the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. You can keep up with Mike on the Mike Potts Photography Facebook page.

The foray location is about a 3.5 hour drive from Eugene. If you would like to spend Friday and/or Saturday night we recommend staying at Hyatt Lake Resort located 20 miles southeast of Ashland on beautiful Hyatt Lake.  The resort offers cabins with full kitchens, a restaurant with a full-service bar, and spectacular views of the lake.

There will be a get together ... social/potluck/grilling of Morels on Saturday evening at Hyatt Lake Resort.

Important: Last year the availability on cabins was wide open and each attendee was requested to call the resort to reserve their own cabin.  Due to higher demand this year, CMS (Sandy Patton) has reserved the last cabins that were available during May. So, Sandy will be coordinating the cabin reservations for Hyatt Lake Resort.  A list of the cabins that were reserved is provided below.  If you want to stay in one of these cabins, please email Sandy at forays@cascademyco.org.  After coordinating a cabin with Sandy, you will still be required to contact Hyatt Lake Resort and finalize your reservation by May 10th.

Families are welcome. If you prefer to stay elsewhere, below are some other options in the area. Or, feel free to stay in Ashland, which is about 45 minutes away.

Green Springs Inn and Resort – Single rooms & Cabins, located less than 10 minutes from Hyatt Lake Resort.

Howard Prairie Resort and Campground – Tent and RV camping, located 13 minutes from Hyatt Lake Resort.

We will be departing on the foray promptly at 9:30am. You will receive detailed meetup information after completing your registration. This foray is open only to CMS members. The foray is capped at 20 adults (excluding CMS Board Members).
