Helping children achieve their potential positively

April 2017

Summer exam season is looming and the end-of-year reports will soon be being written. This tends to focus parents' mind on school grades. But do we get too hung up on grades and forget about the wider view of learning? Can the pressure we put on children to achieve academically sometimes jeopardise their wider wellbeing?

The theme for this month's newsletter is how to support children's learning positively without piling on the pressure. There is an expert guest post by academic coach Lucy Parsons (How to support tweens/teens to be better students), a discussion on how parents can balance supporting children's school success with protecting their self-esteem (When homework threatens self-esteem, it's time to take stock) and a review of a GCSE/A Level revision aid (You can lead a teen to learning but you can't make him think). For younger children, the emphasis now is on 'school readiness' but what does this really mean? And what about all the other essential life skills children need to learn which they won't get from school?

All this plus this month's other news from The Positive Parenting Project!

How to support your tween/teen to study better
We all want our children to make the most of their education. However, when you watch your tween diligently putting in the hours only to be rewarded with less than remarkable grades, it's hard to know what to do. Or what about the teen who dedicates hours to their phone but only minutes to schoolwork? Academic coach Lucy Parsons is here with some expert advice for parents. Read more...
Homework v. self-esteem?
Homework needs doing at exactly the wrong time for working parents. Tackling those reading and spellings (again!) can easily turn into a battle in which our frustration is hard to hide. Despite best intentions, there is often very little joy in home learning. If that sounds familiar, here are a few ideas to help you support your children's schoolwork in a way that nurtures their wellbeing and inspires a love of learning. Read more...
You can lead them to learning...
...but you can't make them think! This modern parenting tale serves as a reminder that even when we do our utmost to provide support for our children's learning, if they don't want to engage, they won't. If nothing else, it will definitely make you smile (and feel a bit better about your own kids!). Read more...
Being able to read, write or do arithmetic are the least important skills a pre-schooler needs to be ready to start school. So what is 'school readiness', why is it important and what can parents do to ensure their pre-schoolers get off to a flying start at school? Read more...
Recent research suggests that children are no longer learning basic practical life skills such as cooking, cleaning, DIY and gardening. What does this tell us about how family life has changed? And, in the world of YouTube, does it actually matter? Read more...
