The theme of the 2018 World Social Science Forum will be Security and Equality for Sustainable Futures. The Forum will take place from 25 - 28 September 2018, hosted by Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan.
The growing complexity of the challenges facing societies worldwide has given rise to increasing concerns about security, across a range of different sectors. Life in the Anthropocene era is calling into question the sustainability of human activities, with critical implications for equity, and for food, water and energy security. From issues of freedom and democracy to cyber- and bio-warfare, the changing nature of conflict highlights the complexity and interrelatedness of old and new threats to human security. It is against this backdrop that Agenda 2030 sets out to ‘secure our planet’, while ensuring that ‘no-one will be left behind’.
Over the course of four days, discussion at the World Social Science Forum will explore how current concerns about security relate to equality and sustainability. The Forum is expected to convene around 1,000 researchers from all over the world, who will identify critical research priorities on security, as well as data and knowledge gaps, globally and in specific regions. Discussions at the Forum will be arranged around the following sub-themes:
- Sustainability and security
- Cybersecurity, cyberattacks, hybrid warfare
- Human security
- Security and the 2030 Agenda
- Globalization, diversity, and cultures of belonging
- Development and inclusion in urban and rural areas
- Gender equality and security
- Health, safety and biosecurity
- Freedom, democracy and security.
The tri-annual World Social Science Forum is a flagship activity of the ISSC. The 2018 Forum will be held at Fukuoka Convention Center, hosted by Kyushu University and supported by the Science Council of Japan (SCJ) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). World Social Science Fora convene researchers, funders, policymakers and other stakeholders from all over the world to discuss important societal challenges, take stock of social science contributions and capacities, and make recommendations for future research, practice and policy.
A call for nominations to the Scientific Committee will be released shortly, and a call for session proposals is expected to open in June 2017. We'll keep you updated in this newsletter.

Ethnografilm 2017
The fourth edition of the Ethnografilm festival opens on April 11th in Paris, with a special performance of Buswell & Nyberg's Paris Music Challenge. In only nine days, speaking no French, they aim to form a ten-piece band made entirely from musicians they bump into on the streets of Paris, and then to write an original set of music to be performed by this group of musicians who've never played together before - at the reception of Ethnografilm!

Call for funding proposals: Transformations to Sustainability
There are just a few days left to respond to the call for proposals launched by the Belmont Forum, NORFACE and the ISSC under the banner of “Transformations to Sustainability” (T2S). This T2S call is helping to place social science and humanities at the heart of interdisciplinary research on and for sustainability, with a focus on three themes:
- Governance and institutional dimensions of transformations to sustainability
- Economy and finance of transformations to sustainability
- Well-being, quality of life, identity, and social and cultural values in relation to transformations to sustainability
The programme also aims to tap into and develop existing knowledge by facilitating new collaborations between countries which are not frequently involved in large-scale international collaborative research efforts. The ISSC is participating in the programme with dedicated funding for research teams in low- and lower-middle-income countries.

Putting children first: identifying solutions and taking action to tackle poverty and inequality in Sub-Saharan Africa
The Comparative Research on Poverty programme (CROP), co-sponsored by ISSC and University of Bergen, invites paper proposals by 30 April for an international conference to be held 23-25 October 2017 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, hosted by the Ethiopian Centre for Child Research, Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI), CROP, The Impact Initiative at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and the Global Coalition to End Child Poverty, including African Child Policy Forum (ACPF), Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP), Save the Children, UNICEF and Young Lives.
The conference aims to engage policy makers, practitioners and researchers in identifying solutions for fighting child poverty and inequality in Sub-Saharan Africa, and inspiring action towards change. It will offer a platform for bridging divides across sectors, disciplines and policy, practice and research.

Earlier this month we commemorated International Women's Day with a blog highlighting findings from the 2016 World Social Science Report that demonstrate the need to #BeBoldforChange on gender inequality.
ACKnowl-EJ - one of the networks funded under our Transformations to Sustainability programme - launched a new map which makes visible the struggles of women in Latin America against mining and in defense of life, dignity and territory. The map highlights personal stories from women on the impacts they suffer as well as the alternatives they are putting into place.

Congratulations to World Social Science Fellow Arnisson Andre C. Ortega, who has been awarded the prestigious 2017 Virginia A. Miralao Excellence in Research Award for his publication Neoliberalizing Spaces in the Philippines: Suburbanization, Transnational Migration, and Dispossession. The Virginia A. Miralao Award is made by the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC) to recognize original and meaningful research by promising young social scientists.
World Social Science Fellows have launched the Trans-Urban Knowledge Network (TUKN), an online platform to share visions and approaches to creating alternative urban futures that advance the sustainability and resilience of cities and urbanizing regions.
The TUKN is a global collaboration between researchers from across a wide range of fields, who share a commitment to conducting applied critical research that generates alternatives to business-as-usual approaches to urban development and governance. Its founding members include many of the ISSC’s World Social Science Fellows who participated in the series of Sustainable Urbanization seminars between March 2013 and September 2015. The online platform creates a space for urban researchers to generate and share knowledge that is valid for science and valuable to society.

In Memorium: Çiğdem Kağıtçıbaşı
We are saddened to hear of the death of Professor Çiğdem Kağıtçıbaşı, former Vice-President of the ISSC and International Union of Psychological Science. A leading figure within social psychology in Turkey, Professor Kağıtçıbaşı was known for her pioneering work to strengthen the education of women and girls.
