In case you missed the Breaking News email last night, reports indicate Sacramento State will announce its AD selection this morning with Saint Mary's boss Orr as the choice. The appointment of Orr will end a process that included on-campus interviews some weeks ago, then went dark for a number of days before The Sacramento Bee's Voisin published yesterday. Orr has led the Gaels in Moraga for a day short of 11 years & will return to his hometown to take charge of the Hornets. (link)
The New York Times' Schonburn looks at the bench seating arrangements of MBB and WBB teams, which are sometimes "governed by a deliberate roll call, which the coach will thoughtfully compose, then assign, then at times reshuffle, like a wedding planner arranging and the composition of a reception's dinner tables." Syracuse MBB HC Boeheim likes to have the team trainer close to him, while UCLA makes sure the video coordinator that scouted the opponent is close at hand. Stanford WBB AC Paye saves the seat next to her for the player that most recently exited the game so she can provide "instant feedback." Former UCLA/St. Johns MBB HC Lavin, who flanked himself with his first coach, former Purdue boss Keady, and his first recruit, Hines, but allowed AC Dunlap to sit on the other end of the bench for the "unorthodox angle": "Coaches and teams are creatures of habit and routine. From that standpoint, once we established where people were, there's some value to that." UConn WBB HC Auriemma: "The young guys think if they sit closer to me, they're going to get in earlier. What they don't understand is when they sit closer to me, they get an earful. And sometimes, by the end of their career, they've moved down the bench." More. (link)
Cynopsis Sports chats with Turner Sports VP/GM of NCAA Digital Poole on the digital growth of the NCAA Tourney, what fans can expect with virtual reality of this weekend's MBB Final Four, how her team measures success & more. Biggest surprise? "Across an overall media landscape in which desktop viewing has dropped, it has generated considerable growth across MML year over year, speaking to the must-see nature of this event." Interesting nugget on the VR front, "We’ve introduced a new business model, creating virtual ticket options that provide a courtside vantage point and, for the first time, a fully produced VR experience for the NCAA Tournament." (link)
Strategic Marketing was the focus of last night's Athletic Director U. entry as South Carolina Senior Assoc. AD for Marketing & Branding/CMO Nichols, East Carolina Assoc. AD for External Operations/SWA Binegar, Minnesota Senior Assoc. AD for Fan Engagement Taylor-Dixon and Oregon Senior Assoc. AD for Marketing & Public Relations Pintens provided expert perspective on a quartet of questions. On the question of which professional sports or Fortune 500 brands are doing compelling work, Nichols points to Bleacher Report & Wasserman's Laundry Service, Binegar notes creativity from Burger King, Taylor-Dixon is all about Starbucks & Pintens, naturally, keeps a close eye on Nike. More, including the influence of Snapchat & Instagram, role responsibilities ROI & problems for Google ad products. (link)

The latest lesson on social media virality comes from United Airlines as a desk attendant in Denver would not allow some young females on a flight to Minneapolis yesterday due to their leggings. A notable activist happened to also be on the flight & live tweeted much of the situation. Initial responses by United pointed to the company's policies. Later we learned the two passengers turned away were "pass riders" or likely connected to United employees & as such have a different set of attire expectations. Finally, United submitted a tweet that read, "To our customers…your leggings are welcome!" (link)

Outgoing ESPN college FB voice Ponder leads off SI's Deitsch's weekly media column as she's set to take over hosting duties for Sunday NFL Countdown. "This opportunity provides a great combination of things I want most out of my life. It requires me to challenge myself and take some risks. It gives me a chance to participate in important conversations in areas I believe I can substantively contribute. It keeps me a part of something much bigger than me with some really impressive and quality people and keeps me involved in the game I love. It's a schedule that allows me to be the kind of present and engaged wife and mom I want to be. It also just sounded like a whole lot of fun." More from Ponder. Later in his column, Deitsch also notes HBO's Vice episode coming up this Friday night at 7:30 EST titled "End of Amateurism," that includes Michigan State MBB HC Izzo, Texas Tech AD Hocutt & others. (link)
HC Notes: Sounds like Furman MBB HC Medved is headed to take over the program at Drake. (link); UNC Wilmington MBB Interim HC Siddle has pulled his candidacy from the permanent opportunity to lead the Seahawks. Penn State is one of a handful of FB programs adding support staff members with the intent of giving the on-field product its highest likelihood of winning games. In 2012-13 total pay for support staff members was $683K. In 2013-14 the number spiked to $2.86M, followed by $4.06M in 14-15, then down a touch to $3.66M last season. HC Franklin has added the new roles of Offensive Analyst & Recruiting Coordinator since the Rose Bowl ended to round-out his group of eight. (link)
Legal: Behind the paywall of Law360, meaning we'll probably hear more today from other media outlets, "The NCAA asked the Ninth Circuit to deny a $42 million attorneys' fee request in the long-running litigation over rules barring student-athletes from being paid for the use of their names, images and likenesses, arguing Thursday that the win was only partial and doesn’t warrant such a large award." That "long-running litigation" would be the O'Bannon case. (link); Minnesota's chief auditor will review the process & background of the sexual assault situation that led to the suspension of a number of Golden Gophers FB student-athletes during the season & three who ended up getting expelled. (link)
USF FB student-athlete Childs is in stable condition after suffering injuries from a shooting incident over the weekend. According to the Tampa Police Department, the off-campus incident was "possibly road rage in which Childs and another individual got into an argument and each person had a gun, and Childs was shot several times." HC Strong issued the following statement: "We are deeply concerned that an incident occurred overnight in which one of our players, Hassan Childs, was injured in a shooting. Thankfully, Hassan is in stable condition and being well cared for, and no one else was injured. There is an ongoing investigation of the incident and we are in the process of gathering further information. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, we cannot comment further at this time." (link)
Public policy guru Talbot-Zorn and Marz Consulting founder Marz share via Harvard Business Review: "The Busier You Are, the More You Need Quiet Time." The duo references the "structured periods of silence" for California Governor Brown, Ohio Congressman Ryan, billionaire hedge-funder Dalio and Harvard Biz School Professor George that are "important factors in their success." Recent studies show that moments of silence can restore the nervous system, help sustain energy and recondition our minds, "but cultivating silence isn’t just about getting respite from the distractions of office chatter or tweets. Real sustained silence, the kind that facilitates clear and creative thinking, quiets inner chatter as well as outer." So how do you do it? 1. Punctuate meetings with five minutes of quiet time; 2. Take a silent afternoon in nature; 3. Go on a media fast (but only after you read D1.ticker today); and 4. Take the plunge and try a meditation retreat. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
As her time in the position comes to an end, Arizona Interim AD Barnes has made a major impact on Wildcats student-athletes by patterning her leadership style after her former coach, Softball HC Candrea, who won his 1,500th career game yesterday. Candrea: "I’m so proud of Erika and who she’s become and what she’s doing today. To me it’s one of those feathers in your hat as a coach. My big job is to get kids ready for life after softball, and she’s a good example of being able to do that and it’s an honor to work for her." Barnes: "Like he’s said to all his players to have a balance in their life and lead by example, I want to do the exact same thing for these student-athletes." (link)
Connecticut WBB HC Auriemma recently commented on his remarks about the importance of body language and enthusiasm at last year’s Final Four and the role that parents play in the development of student-athletes. Auriemma: “I try, when we go recruiting, to identify those kids who still have a tremendous interest in being great teammates. We're not always successful. Believe me, I've had my share of guys that were really hard to coach for that reason, and you can trace it back generally to the parents, without question. You can trace it back to the parents." (link)
Cleveland State's student newspaper takes a look at a 30% decrease in ticket sales for the Vikings in 2016 compared to the figures in 2015. Asst. AD for Marketing Longmeier on how new MBB HC Felton can help, "It’s going to be more about what that person is doing out in the public eye. Whether it’s with students who don’t buy tickets or whether it’s with people in the community through our relationships we have with Destination Cleveland and such." (link); The Cauldron also takes a long look at CSU's student fee situation that currently sits at $3 per credit hour to athletics for any student taking nine or more. Man, Tennessee fans are tough. New UT Chancellor Davenport took to Twitter on Saturday to encourage fans to be a part of the school's attempt at setting a world record with Today Show weatherman Roker: "Be a part of another Tennessee championship @TODAYshow #rokerthon Wed, 31st, 5:30 am. Help make the biggest PowerT." Fans pounced on Davenport's use of the word "championship," something that has eluded the FB program since 1998, while others pointed out that Wednesday is the 29th, not the 31st. Not her first misstep on the social media platform, as during her first week in Knoxville she accidentally swapped "to" for "for" in the Vols slogan "I will give my all for Tennessee today." (link)
Around Higher Ed: South Carolina Prez Pastides in a tweet to students, "Sorry students. If we cancel classes tomorrow, what would we do after a WBB win tomorrow? You had fun today. Go to class tomorrow!" (link); Howard's faculty have demanded the resignation of Prez Frederick due to "systematic issues at the school," as it is no longer ranked in the Top 100 according to U.S. News & World Report. (link); Chicago State personnel are pushing back on Illinois Governor Rauner's desired appointment of former CEO of Chicago Public Schools Vallas atop CSU. (link); The Chancellor search at Southern Illinois is down to four. No names are public. (link); The UC System spent nearly $1M into the probe of former UC Davis Chancellor Katehi. (link); Missouri State will raise tuition a touch to offset roughly half of the university's $8M shortfall due to a decrease in state funding. (link)
Also Noticed: Gonzaga AD Roth on the closing moments of the Zags win over Xavier & entry to the Final Four, "I looked up in the stands at my family and I started to lose it so I had to look away. The feeling is indescribable." (link); NFL Commish Goodell has hired Vanderbilt Medical Center Professor & founder of the Vanderbilt Sports Concussion Center Sills as the league's Chief Medical Officer.
