April 2017
May 2017

Spring is now officially here, although winter continues raging like a lion. The weather reflects our nation's political tensions.  In this atmosphere, the Council remains focused on addressing our neighbors' needs, while giving a clear voice to the need for truth, respect and compassion as we endeavor to be God's hands and feet on Earth.  As we await Easter's rebirth, we strive to be a light for our community.

In that spirit, please click here see the (blurry...) video link of our wonderful staff singing "This Little Light of Mine" at our recent staff retreat.  The retreat was made possible by the generosity of the Evensong Retreat Center in Harwich Port.

Feel free to join the chorus!

Peace,
Edye

Youth StreetReach
Youth StreetReach volunteers will be working on the Ragnar Relay on May 12th at two locations, one at Eastern Mountain Sports on Rte 132 in Hyannis, and one at a site to be named in Brewster.  Ragnar is a nationally run Relay Race that utilized non-profits to run their “sites” along the way.  The race begins in Hull Massachusetts on Friday May 12th and ends in Provincetown on Saturday May 13th.  Both of our sites need eight volunteers at all times to direct runners in,  check off names, keep the site clean, and direct runners to leave.  We can use volunteers for three hour shifts beginning at 9 pm May 12th in Hyannis and at midnight in Brewster.  Youth StreetReach receives funds for this service which help to cover expenses for our breakfasts for the homeless all year long.  If any youth or adults are interested please contact Marilyn Lariviere 508-776-6059 or mlariv@comcast.net to sign up for a shift.

National Council of Churches
The Cape Cod Council of Churches stands in solidarity with our Jewish brothers and sisters.   We oppose the plague of anti-Semitic actions and rhetoric in our country and the prejudice they express.  Please click here to see the letter of support from the National Council of Churches.

Community News:

Does your church have a Prayer Shawl Ministry?
Do you knit or crochet? Does your church have a prayer shawl ministry? Do people knit hats or make quilts? Does your church have a parish nurse ministry? Will you work with St. Peter’s Lutheran Church?

Imagine 500 prayer shawls, hats, or quilts: seeing them, holding them, praying over them, and then giving them away to churches and human service ministries to promote healing in our communities. We invite you to help us achieve this!

Motivated by the 500th anniversary of the Reformation (acknowledging the revitalization but also divisions that ensued), our goal is, through collaboration with others, to serve and promote healing in our communities. We are planning an event, "For Healing in the World", to be held in October, 2017, which will include music and poetry but be centered in the blessing, dedication and gifting of 500 prayer shawls, hats, or quilts to churches and human service ministries.

For more information or to get involved, please contact Marianne O’Boyle at marianne@oboyle.net.

Sustainability Initiative at Pilgrim Congregational Church

Palm Sunday Parade in Harwich
Harwich United Methodist Church, Pilgrim Congregational Church, St. Mary of Magdala Ecumenical Catholic Church, and St. Peter's Lutheran Church will each have representatives at this ecumenical event.  People are invited to meet at Doane Park (the site of the Town of Harwich Christmas tree) for a brief prayer before parading with palm branches to the front steps of Pilgrim Congregational Church.  People will be invited to take some palms back to their own churches as a sign of our unity and working together.

Palm branches are used to remember Jesus' triumphant entry to the city of Jerusalem before his betrayal, arrest, trial, and crucifixion.  The parade marks the beginning of Holy Week, which culminates on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017.

To learn more, please contact Rev. Tiffany Nicely Holleck at (508) 432-5172, ext 13 or calledbyname@comcast.net.

First Church of Sandwich to Host Author
We are thrilled to announce that on Saturday, April 22nd, First Church will host the Reverend Doug Bixby, author of the book Navigating the Nonsense.  He will be speaking about the ideas presented in this incredibly timely book.  At a point in the history of our nation when conflict has erupted into destructive animosity and broken relationships, Reverend Bixby’s book provides a road map in which conflict can be a vital ingredient for growth and transformation. Nearly a hundred congregants at First Church have read this book.  Reverend Bixby’s appearance is a tribute to our church’s commitment to healthy communication and to our relationships with one another.  We invite the community to join us as the wisdom of his approach has universal applications not only in churches but in all types of organizations and families as well.  We are grateful for this opportunity to share this event with our neighbors.

About the Council
The Cape Cod Council of Churches serves people of all ages from Cape Cod and the Islands who are facing some of life's most difficult challenges.  We have been privileged to serve our neighbors for over 50 years, meeting people at their points of critical need and helping them move forward to greater stability.  We are able to impact the lives of over 6,500 residents each year through the Council's seven different programs and the work of over 400 volunteers.  With the help of churches and our community our mission comes to life, "Serving God by Serving Others," as we offer practical assistance, spiritual support and hope - all without regard for religious affiliation.

A BABY CENTER provides critical basic baby needs to income eligible families (WIC) for infants up to age three on Cape Cod and the Islands. The Center serves over 500 babies each month.  Families receive diapers, wipes, formula, gently-used clothing and other baby necessities.

BRIDGE TO HOPE mentors women while incarcerated and upon release, as they work toward building new lives centered on spiritual, mental, emotional and economic life skills.  Bayside Cottage is a transitional housing residence in Hyannis for Bridge to Hope clients who may stay for up to six months while  securing employment and permanent housing.

COVENANT TO CARE  matches a Cape & Islands congregation with Foster Care Families, supporting those families and the foster children in their care.  This program works in partnership with the MA Dept. of Children & Families.

FAITH FAMILY KITCHEN  provides hot, nutritious meals to our food insecure neighbors three evenings a week in Hyannis.  Volunteer congregations and community groups help to prepare and serve meals each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

HANDS OF HOPE FOOD PANTRY AND OUTREACH CENTER offers emergency assistance to low-income families in the mid-Cape area (Mashpee to Harwich).  Assistance includes: food, clothing, small household goods and financial relief to prevent evictions.

HOMELESS MINISTRIES
Street Outreach Ministry:  Provides assistance with emergency shelter, clothing and medical referrals for homeless men, women and families.
Case Management and Volunteer Mentoring:  Helps to stabilize formerly homeless individuals into successful transitional and permanent housing.
Youth StreetReach:  Enables teens to interact with our homeless neighbors by serving a meal and hearing firsthand how a life's path can lead to unexpected circumstances.

HOSPITAL CHAPLAINCY  sponsors Chaplains at Cape Cod Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital who offer prayers, hope and comfort to patients and families in their time of illness and recovery.
