COR Update March 13-19

Pastor's Message

Brothers and Sister in Christ,
I am writing this letter to notify you that I will be resigning my call as Associate Pastor of Church of the Resurrection. My last Sunday will be May 21, 2017.

It is with great sadness that I write this letter to you. However, at the annual meeting in February, a plan for financial stability was brought before the congregation. This plan included the possibility of reorganizing our staff. Through conversation and study, it has been determined that we can no longer sustain a staff that includes two full-time pastors. A follow-up letter from the church council will be forthcoming with further details.

This transition will be difficult for all of us. Already I have sent my paperwork out in search of a new call. It is a process that can take some time, but I hope to be in a congregation before the end of summer. In my remaining time with you, I hope to have time for conversations of farewell and help to plan for the transition to a one pastor congregation. I have come to love you in my time as your pastor and appreciate COR’s vibrancy and energy, your commitment to faith formation, service, and social justice.

For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. – Jeremiah 29:11

Peace be yours,
Worship

Serenity Inns 7th Annual Celebration of Recovery Dinner
( April 2, 9, 16)

Serenity Inns provides homeless men the opportunity to rebuild their lives in an environment of beauty, support and accountability. This has been a successful ministry for many years. We support Serenity Inns by providing a meal once a month at its house in downtown Milwaukee.  The 7th Annual Celebration of Recovery will be held on April 27 at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee.  The event includes dinner, music and a silent auction. You can find out more about attending the dinner at serenityinns.org.

Time: 5:30-7:30 p.m. (includes a family dinner)
Cost: $8 per child (covers t-shirt)

Families will start in the fellowship hall for dinner at 5:30. Then, at 6, children will head to VBS while parents can participate in an optional Bible study.

Why did we change the Creed?

Some folks have asked why the Apostles’ Creed in our bulletin now says Jesus descended “to the dead” instead of “to hell.” That is a really great question!

Because the Apostles’ Creed is from the first century after Christ and the Nicene Creed from the third century, we can’t and don’t change the Creeds. Furthermore, because the Creeds were basic statements of faith written by a council of bishops from the whole church (east and west … a long time before there were Roman Catholics and Lutherans, or even more than one type of Lutheran), and they all agreed on the main ideas of the Christian faith, we can’t change the Creeds. (Well, perhaps we could, if all the branches of the Christian faith got together and we all agreed on the change … but that is highly unlikely and probably not helpful.)

But did you know that the Creeds were not written in English? Also, there are two English translations of what happened to Jesus after he died. If you look in our red ELW hymnals, on page 105, the version of the Creed we are now saying … “to the dead,” is the main ELCA version. Jesus “descended into hell” is the optional version in the footnote.

I changed what we are saying in worship to reflect the current primary ELCA practice, because I think it’s pretty likely that your new pastor may be formed by the mainstream practice and say “to the dead.”

One of the main purposes of our transition time together is for us all to have a chance to try different things and talk about them. It’s really useful for us to have conversations about what we are doing and why … and what it means.

So thanks! to those who asked “why we changed the Creed.”

Knitted/Crocheted Knockers

Saturday, April 15 at 1 pm at church. Please bring food to share for a potluck lunch.

Knitted Knockers are special handmade breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast.

Traditional breast prosthetics are usually expensive, heavy, sweaty and uncomfortable. They typically require special bras or camisoles with pockets and can't be worn for weeks after surgery. Knitted Knockers, on the other hand, are soft, comfortable and beautiful, and when placed in a regular bra, they take the shape and feel of a real breast. Our special volunteer knitters provide these free to those requesting them.

Knitted Knockers can be adjusted to fill the gap for breasts that are uneven and easily adapted for those going through reconstruction by simply removing some of the stuffing.

There are patterns for knitting or crocheting here at the organization’s website: https://www.knittedknockers.org/

Note: Since the organization wants the knockers to be soft, you have to buy special yarn to do this.
There is a list of approved yarns on the website, so check before starting the pattern. We will be doing both knitting and crocheting that day, so you can get help.
