AUTUMN 2017

Welcome to the Autumn RAC HUB news

The RAC Hub News helps those working in aged care facilities stay in touch with what’s happening in residential aged care and in palliative care. It will also keep you up-to-date with any changes in the Residential Aged Care (RAC) Hub.
In our case study, a family conference has been called at the Bearpark Aged Care Facility (Bearpeark ACF). Recently there have been complaints made to the manager regarding concerns that the staff caring for a resident, Frank, are not feeding him. We also highlight how a placement through PEPA helps aged care staff and their facility.

What's new in RAC?

Single Aged Care Quality Framework

The Australian Government is developing a single aged care quality framework. They have released a consultation paper with a draft set of aged care standards and its rationale. There is also a consultation on options for assessing performance against aged care quality standards. Feedback is needed by 21 April 2017.

National Palliative Care Week

This year’s theme for National Palliative Care Week is ‘You matter, your care matters. Palliative care can make a difference’.
The theme addresses the need for aged care services to provide palliative care where appropriate. Watch about for events and activities from 21 to 28 May 2017.

Interprofessional Education in Aged Care

A new provider-developed resource guides residential aged care organisations through implementing a student placement and staff education program in their facilities. The free online program – Interprofessional Education in Aged Care (IPEAC) - aims to increase professional collaboration between students from all health disciplines and improve the quality of care of residents.

RAC: Frank’s Food Refusal

The Manager of Bearpark Aged Care Facility, David, has called a family meeting. He thinks this is the best way to help a family understand how Frank’s care needs are changing following a complaint from his son and daughter about his diet.

Frank was diagnosed with dementia two years ago. He was admitted to Bearpark six months ago as his wife and adult children were struggling to manage all aspects of his care at home.

Spotlight on Projects in RAC: PEPA

PEPA stands for the Program of Experience in the Palliative Approach. It provides an opportunity for the health, aged and community care workforce employed in non-specialist palliative care settings to improve confidence and develop skills in working with people with palliative care needs. PEPA provides this experience through funded clinical workforce placements or workshops; integration of learning into the participant’s practice and establishing networks of support.

To find out more about who is involved and why this project is important read the full newsletter (552kb pdf).
