Every year, the Ethnic Studies Department organizes a free community summit.
Artists, writers, students, community members, scholars, and activists all gather at Fullerton College to attend engaging workshops, see speakers, and listen to music that are "social justice" themed.
In November 2016, our theme was "Salud y Revolucion" (Health and Revolution).
For our next summit, we want to know what date YOU would like it to land on.

PILAS Summit
So, what does PILAS stand for?
PILAS stands for "People's Intervention for Liberation, Autonomy, and Self-determination".
It is part of a Spanish phrase that Latinx families tell you when you need to get fired up: Ponte las pilas!

What is PILAS?
PILAS is a collective of women of color in Orange County whose goal is to create spaces and events where people can learn, grow, question, and become aware of issues within underserved communities.

What is the PILAS Summit?
The PILAS Summit is an annual gathering at Fullerton College where artists, writers, students, community members, scholars, and activists come together to explore a "social justice" theme. We have had workshops ranging from topics about Chicana feminism to healthy eating, and featured speakers like rapper Cihuatl Ce and poet Remi Kanazi

Can I be part of this?
Yes! Fullerton College students have presented alongside professors and scholars from UCs and CSUs, community activists and organizers, writers, and artists.  We encourage everyone interested in social justice to apply to present, perform music or poetry, or volunteer.

Does the PILAS Summit charge any fees to attend?
No! This event is free and public. Bring your family and friends to come learn and find resources about social issues affecting our communities. If you don't know a lot about social justice, that is okay- this summit can be the starting place for you to get information about causes that you haven't heard about.
PILAS Summit Date
For our next PILAS Summit, we wanted to ask YOU what day you would like it to land on.
Since 2015, when the PILAS Summit started as the "Social Justice Summit," we have always had it on the Friday before Thanksgiving.
We plan to shake things up and organize the next one as a two day gathering, meaning that speakers will be presenting and workshops will be happening over a span of two days.
We have created an online poll for you to vote and choose what works best for you. Please click the button below to vote!

Watch out for our call for proposals!
If you are interested in presenting at the PILAS Summit, watch out for our "Call for Proposals" email!

We will be hosting workshops about how to write proposals and lead small-to-medium groups of people over the next few months.
