Dear Friends of the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre (JHGC)
These first few months of 2017 have highlighted an incredible public interest and engagement in the work of the Centre. Learner and educator groups are now visiting us for educational programmes almost every day. We have already had over 2,000 visitors this year!
On the 27 January, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we launched a traveling version of our core exhibition. This exhibition explores the history of genocide and human rights, the Holocaust and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
In addition, we have continued to host a diverse range of public and special members-only events, including commemoration ceremonies, lectures, film screenings and workshops. We also opened our first contemporary art exhibition – ‘Weights & Measures: Portraits of Justice’ – looking at international justice from Nuremberg to the ICC. We invite you to come and explore the Centre's symbolic building and newest exhibitions, as well as participate in an exciting programme of public events planned for the year.
Finally, I would like to thank the small and dedicated staff of the JHGC, our dozens of active volunteers, including those who graduated from our last volunteer course, our Board of Trustees members and donors for all they so generously do for the Centre.

Since the start of the year, hundreds of High School learners and educators, university students, and varied adult groups have visited the JHGC for educational programmes.

In honour of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the JHGC partnered with the United Nations Information Centre and Education Africa for a workshop on the Holocaust for over 200 learners from Ahmed Timol Secondary School in Azaadville.

Holocaust survivor Veronica Phillips spoke to a packed hall at Eldoraigne Hoerskool. Learners waited for over 40 minutes to get a photograph and autograph from her after school hours.

The JHGC has hosted hundreds of learners from various schools, including over 100 Grade 9 learners from Thabo Secondary School, Soweto.
|
|
|

Our public programme includes a diverse and stimulating series of events, ranging from lectures and film screenings to theatre performances and conferences. We partner with both local and international organisations, embassies, NGO's and cultural institutions.

Our partnership event with UNIC, in commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, included keynote speaker Professor Shirli Gilbert (University of Southampton) speaking on "Music on the Brink of Destruction".

Visiting speaker Dr Werner Dreier (Director, erinnern.at) gave a fascinating public lecture on "Holocaust Education & Public Memory in Austria," with the generous support of the Austrian Embassy of Pretoria.

The JHGC partnered with Limmud Johannesburg for Human Rights Day, presenting the findings from the Kaplan Centre's latest study on "Attitudes and perceptions of black South Africans towards Jews" to over 200 people.

The work of the JHGC aims to honour and support all Holocaust and genocide survivors. We offer social, educational and psychological services for survivors and their families. Dedicated volunteers and staff facilitate monthly meetings for our Holocaust survivor group. Many Holocaust and Rwandan genocide survivors further volunteer to share their testimonies with learner and adult groups to support our educational programmes.

VOLUNTEER
We currently have over 50 active volunteers sharing their time and expertise in various activities, including photography, registration and social media for events, PR and design, manning the reception desk, guiding and supporting our educational programmes.
