What's the Point? Classical:NEXT Answers Deep Questions with Opening, Conference and Showcases

We always enjoy asking 'why', and today's announcement gives lots of opportunities for that! It's a pervading theme of the Opening, will be pondered musically in our off C:N showcase and posed (along with 'how', 'what', 'where' and 'when') all across the latest conference programme, all of which are revealed today. You can now also begin creating your own timeline for Classical:NEXT 2017 with our full schedule. Read on for all the information!

All the best,
Jim Hickson and Paul Bräuer on behalf of the entire Classical:NEXT team

What's the Point? Classical:NEXT 2017 Opening

Instead of showcasing a country, the 2017 Opening will ask: What’s the Point? With populism and division seeming to be current trends, it is important to revisit the reasons why we, as music professionals, are in this business. We aim to set the tone for an edition of Classical:NEXT that will give both professional inspiration as well as answers of how classical music is relevant today.

So, the Classical:NEXT 2017 Opening programme will feature a small selection of the many projects and people from around the world that widen the relevance of classical music for their communities – because music is better when everyone is involved.

The main performance of the evening will be from UK-based BME orchestra the Chineke! Orchestra, with words from Chineke's Chi-chi Nwanoku MBE, Sphinx Organization's Afa S. Dworkin and conductor Marin Alsop.

See full details of the Opening programme, including soloists and repertoire, on our website.

More Additions to the Conference Programme

Along with the Opening and Showcase announcements, we've also announced a bunch of new sessions in our Conference programme! Among them are several new conference sessions, network meetings and off C:N presentations, covering a range of topics and formats from the NEXT:Tech session, looking at the latest technological answers to art music's questions, to the session entitled Epic Fail, where professions share their worst business mistakes – what happens in the room stays in the room! Joining us for these new sessions are representatives of Boosey & Hawkes, Ricordi, Naxos of America, Theater Basel and the London Symphony Orchestra.

See a full round-up of all the new sessions announced today on C:N NET, as well as browsing the full programme at the conference sessions overview, network meetings overview and full schedule.

MusMA Present 'Music and Exile'

In addition to the limited showcase slots available during Classical:NEXT, the off C:N Showcase format offers further opportunity to present new music and artists to the delegates. This year’s off C:N showcase programme is a very special one: MusMA, Music Masters on Air, is a collaboration between European art institutions, the festivals of the European Festival Association and the radio network of the European Broadcasting Union.

At Classical:NEXT, MusMA will present performances of pieces from five composers. Each piece was commissioned by a different European festival, and all address the 2017 theme of Music and Exile: the galvanising effect of cultural exchange during crisis and displacement. The performers will be the Belgium-based the Amôn Quartet.

For more details on the programme to be presented at MusMA's off C:N Showcase, see our website.
