New NOACA Trip-Planning Tool to Become Available Soon!

By Beverly Burtzlaff, Air Quality Planner, NOACA

The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) will soon unveil a “one-stop-shop” trip planner for Northeast Ohio in the form of an innovative sustainable transportation website and mobile app. The interactive platform will allow users to plan a trip from point A to point B, and choose from a menu of options including drive alone, carpool, vanpool, transit, bike, and walk.

For each mode, the platform will show preferred routes on a map and calculate the time and distance of travel, cost savings, calories burned, and carbon emissions reduced. It will include map layers that show local transportation infrastructure, such as transit stations and bike lanes, and allow users to connect quickly and easily for carpools and vanpools. It will also allow users to log their trips and keep track of their savings in dollars and emissions.

This new platform also gives businesses and organizations the opportunity to create their own personalized subsites within the platform so they can offer their employees incentives to consider healthier, more efficient modes of transportation for their daily commutes.

The incentives will be unique to each organization and may include transit passes, priority parking for carpoolers, or reduced healthcare premiums. Employers can design friendly competitions among departments to see which ones can log the most alternative commutes in a month.

The platform will also provide an easy way to promote pre-tax commuter benefits that reduce payroll taxes for employers and employees. In addition, the platform will provide robust reporting tools to measure and document savings and performance. The subsites will provide a cost-free opportunity for employers across Northeast Ohio to reduce parking demand, simplify employee commutes, create a healthier workforce, and document their commitment to sustainability.

“NOACA’s goals are to improve air quality, reduce traffic congestion, and foster smart economic growth in the region by reducing single occupancy vehicle trips,” says NOACA Executive Director Grace Gallucci. “If we can accomplish this by making it fun through incentives and competitions within organizations, then it’s even better.”

NOACA’s new site will enhance Northeast Ohio’s image as an innovative, cutting-edge place to do business; a place where new talent will want to live and work; and a clean, vibrant 21st-century metropolitan area. This platform will operate statewide in all seven of Ohio’s major metropolitan areas.

Check out similar sites at travelwise.utah.gov and waytogo.org.

NOACA is planning to launch the site this spring. Employers who are interested in creating a subsite should contact Bev Burtzlaff at bburtzlaff@mpo.noaca.org, or 216-241-2414, ext. 321.

Smart Investments Mean Access to Valuable Information for Cleveland 2030 District

By Jason Wood, Chief of Public Affairs, Cleveland Public Utilities

At Cleveland Water, we know that access to good information can help our customers engage in more active conservation efforts and lower their utility costs. Because of this, when the Cleveland 2030 District asked us to assist in establishing a baseline for water usage by customers in the District, Cleveland Water was ready and able to help.

As a part of the baselining process, Cleveland Water will provide historical water usage data to any Cleveland 2030 District member who requests it. This data is available in an easy to upload format that makes baselining and tracking simple because of smart investments we’ve made in our technology.

Our commitment to helping all of our customers – including those in the Cleveland 2030 District – understand their water usage and control costs, goes beyond providing historical data. Our Clear Reads Automated Meter Reading (AMR) program uses state-of-the-art equipment to obtain meter readings remotely which means improved efficiency and cost-savings as well as readily available water usage data.

As a Cleveland Water customer, you can easily manage your account anytime, anywhere by logging in at www.ClevelandWater.com. Here you can set up automatic or make one-time payments, and you can sign up to receive courtesy leak notifications whenever AMR alerts us that your water has been running continuously. But perhaps the most valuable benefit of this technology is the ability for you to monitor your usage daily, and even hourly, in order to control your utility costs in near real-time.

Our AMR program is only part of Cleveland Water’s aggressive and forward thinking approach to capital investment. Over the past 30 years, we have invested more than $1.6 billion in our infrastructure. We have fully modernized our water treatment plants, pumps, tanks and towers and, as a result, Cleveland Water is not facing the same financial burden as many other water utilities across the country.

Over the next nine years, we will invest more than $235 million in our water mains and buried infrastructure, all while maintaining reasonable water rates for our customers. This is our second year in a row with no rate increases, and that will continue into 2018 as well.

We invite you to experience firsthand the fascinating work we do at Cleveland Water by celebrating Drinking Water Week with us on Saturday, May 13th at our Nottingham Water Treatment Plant Open House. Register for free tours at www.ClevelandWater.com/Know-It-Love-It and enjoy a day of family-friendly fun.

And please, follow us on Facebook and Twitter @ClevelandWater, and subscribe to our blog at www.ClevelandWater.com/news for all the latest news and information. We look forward to a stronger, sustainable community with you.

Building Education Series 2017

We’ve held two of our six education sessions.  If you missed either of them, you can view the recorded sessions or the presentation slides here

Our January education session was Project Financing Options.  We reviewed COSE programs, traditional financing as well as CPACE, ESCOs and Cost Segregation.  I’m sure you’ll learn something by reviewing what our experts shared in this session.

If you missed our March education session, Retrofits for Historic Buildings, even if you aren’t planning to renovate a historic building, you’ll want to listen to the intriguing stories about renovating two landmark Cleveland properties: The 9 and the Scofield.

Next sessions:
May 18: Alternative Transportation
July 20: Vegetated Roofs
September 20: Lighting, Daylighting and Automated Controls
November 16: Building Safety, Security, Emergency Procedures and Disaster Preparedness

Visit our Events page for more information.
Tour Series 2017

If you missed our first tour of the season at the YMCA and Dollar Bank at the Galleria, you missed a great tour.   We passed the hat (or in this case the can) to collect for USGBC’s Emerging Professionals team to compete in this year’s Canstruction event.  This is an annual event where teams compete by building structures with canned goods.  After the judging, the cans are donated to the Cleveland Food Bank.  We raised a substantial amount to help our team buy the canned goods needed for their masterpiece. Thank you for your donations! Canstruction will be on display at Southpark Mall in Strongsville from April 29th to May 7th.

Next tours coming up (all start at 4:00 PM)
April 6: Energy Focus – LED manufacturing facility
May: TBD
June: Date TBD: The 9
July 12: Cleveland Museum of Art
August 15: General Electric Nela Park
September 12: Oatey

Visit our Events page for more information.  All these tours will be followed by a networking happy hour!
