Week 10

From the Headmaster

We come to the end of a very busy and productive term and the boys have certainly earned a well-deserved rest (so have teachers and parents in trying to keep up with them!)

Looking slightly ahead to Week 2 of next term, Open Day will be on Friday 5 May and I would like to invite all parents and their wider circle to come and celebrate all things Grammar St Ives for the morning. Traditionally, Open Day has been designed for prospective parents to visit the School and sample what a Grammar education offers, but over the years it has morphed into an event that all members of our community can enjoy and participate in. The boys love sharing their learning and educational experiences with their families. Open Day provides an opportunity for the Year 6 boys to show visitors around the School and give their perspective on life at St Ives. It is wonderful to watch these boys articulate what this school means to them.

We say farewell to two masters today.  Mr Steve Lupton and Mrs Samantha Rogut will be leaving us to further their careers across the world and across the city respectively. I would like to thank them both for such a wonderful contribution to our School over many years.

I welcome new members of staff to the School from the beginning of Term 2.  Mr Tom Keeble will become the Form Master for 5K (presently 5L), Mr James Palethorpe will become the Form Master on 4P (presently 4R), Mrs Margaret Clarkson will be relieving Mr Cranna as Art Master while he is on Long Service Leave and Mr Glenn Thompson will be the new Assistant to the Art and Science Masters.
The boys received their copy of the 2016 edition of Telopea this week. We value writing at St Ives and this publication highlights the boys’ endeavours throughout the year.

I would like to thank all the masters for supporting the boys in their writing as they learn to express themselves with confidence and creativity.

I would also like to thank Mrs Hardwick and Mrs Heffernan for compiling and editing all the submissions. I am so pleased that this edition reflects the tone, color and energy of our School.
I would like to wish everyone a safe and restful holiday and I look forward to seeing the boys back at School in winter uniform on Wednesday 26 April.

From the Director of Pastoral Care

Buddies

During our final Pastoral Care session for this term, all K-6 boys met with their Buddies. Our Buddy programme directly teaches important pro-social values and skills. These very important values and skills help children to realise how their behaviour impacts on others. We look forward to continuing our Buddy programme during Term 3, as we move into our Peer Support programme next term.

During the holidays, I hope you have the opportunity to embrace The Five Ways to Wellbeing – Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning & Give.

Social Skill of the Week

Term 2 – Week 1 – Being Friendly

Ms L Dorn

From the Director of Studies

What a fabulous term start to a year of learning! As we come to the end of an amazing term full of challenges, wondering and questioning we turn our thinking focus to the parents!

Boys – leave these riddles up to your parents to figure out… Answers will appear in the first newsletter next term.

  • What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries?
  •  There was a green house. Inside the green house there was a white house. Inside the white house there was a red house. Inside the red house there were lots of babies. What is it?
  • What kind of room has no doors or windows?
  •  A man is pushing his car along the road when he comes to a hotel. He shouts, "I'm bankrupt!" Why?
  • Imagine you are in a dark room. How do you get out?

I wish everyone a restful relaxing holiday! See you all next term.

Mrs C Greenup

From the Director of Music

Mr Townley-Jones, Mr Gyngell and I would like to congratulate all the boys who competed in the IPSHA Cross Country Carnival on Saturday 1 April. Congratulations to Nicholas Barnes, Jonty Snyman, Hamish Barnes, Myles Kapoor, Andrew Boyle and Sebastian Ossowski who will represent IPSHA at the CIS Carnival on 15 June.

Saturday Winter Sport

Winter Sport trials have been held during School time over the last few weeks. It is important that we select teams this term as boys are required to attend games on the Saturday of the first week back at School next term.

Teams selected from these trials will remain for the first two weeks of training and games. Subsequent movement, in an effort to grade teams correctly, will occur after Round 2. Teams have been posted up at School for boys to see and Team Sheets for Week 1 have been sent via email to all parents this afternoon. The Team Sheet Newsletter can be accessed by clicking here.

Training Times and Days

All training times and days for this term, including voluntary extra-curricular training sessions before school, can be accessed in a printable document by clicking here.

Mr P Derrin

From the Italian Master

We have been looking at the way Pasqua (Easter) is celebrated in Italy, Australia and other parts of the world. It has important religious significance and also coincides with the beginning of Spring in the Northern hemisphere. In ancient times this was a period of festivities in honour of new life. Easter marks the end of Lent and Holy Week sees many important and interesting rituals carried out in Italian towns and cities.

Papa Francesco will perform mass for thousands in Piazza San Pietro a Roma on Easter Sunday. Italian families gather to enjoy a traditional lunch of agnello (lamb) and a special cake la colomba di Pasqua (baked in the shape of a dove). Children receive beautifully wrapped le uova di cioccolato (chocolate eggs) that contain una sorpresa inside.

The boys have enjoyed various craft activities, making Italian-themed decorations and cards. Year 6 made coniglietti di Pasqua with messages to give to their buddies in Year 3.

Auguri di Buona Pasqua e buone vacanze a tutti!

The Year 6 IPSHA boys will meet in the 5C classroom, the Year 6 Debating Club will meet in the Library classroom and the Year 5 Debating Club will take place in the Italian Room and Enrichment Room next door. Please note that Debating will not be held in Week 8 (Monday 8 June) due to the public holiday. We are looking forward to a productive and enjoyable term learning new skills and refining old ones.

From the Library

Holidays are a terrific time for both children and adults to spend time reading!

One very important factor in helping your sons to become strong readers is for us as parents to model the behaviours and attitudes we want our children to emulate. We can encourage reading by keeping books in the home and reading for pleasure. Holidays are often a great opportunity to change our routine and hopefully slow down to enjoy time reading ourselves!

Research shows us that children learn about reading well before they start school. Young children see people around them readings books, newspapers, maps and signs. By encouraging and modelling leisure time, reading in the home, parents take a most important step in fostering their child’s reading development.

Children who see their parents enjoying reading are more likely to develop good reading habits. Parents who want their children to be good readers need to be a good reading role model.

If you are heading on a long journey these holidays, you might consider borrowing some eAudiobooks from your local library to enjoy on your trip!

In Library lessons this week, each boy spent time choosing books for holiday reading. This term, boys have been encouraged to select books from different parts of our library.
Boys in Years 3 to 6 have been learning about how the Dewey Decimal system is organised and they were encouraged to consider their hobbies, interests or place they would like to visit in the holidays when selecting their books.

Boys in Preschool to Year 2 enjoyed reading Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen in anticipation of Chase the Lion and Carrington’s Cubs Reading Challenges in Term 2.
Click on the video to view Mindy Sterling's reading of Library Lion, or better still, borrow a copy from your local library and read it at home!

From Before and After School Care

Last week at Extend we got creative! We loved learning the 'Word of the Week' as well as playing soccer and tennis. We also enjoyed making origami, creating our own story books and making our own Pokemon cards. Overall it was a great week with lots of craft for the boys to take home.

Next term we look forward to making pen-pals, playing lots of sport including soccer, cricket, and tennis; and participating in more themed activities. Themes for next term will include more Pokemon, Harry Potter, and Star Wars. We wish you a wonderful school holiday break!
