Opportunities to help you become an outstanding researcher
  • ***New Course dates announced!*** Our Summer term dates have been released and are now available to book. Check out the full Personal and Professional Development Programme for a full list of skills training and development workshops tailored for postgraduate researchers across the University.

  • For those expecting to submit their thesis in the next year, our Project Management for Researchers: Completing your PhD course runs on 19 April. This workshop provides you with tools and approaches to completing your PhD ontime. 9:30am to 4:30pm in 35 Berkeley Square.

  • Personal and professional development isn't limited to skills training - it's also about resilience and looking after your wellbeing. Check out the Student Counselling Service's free workshop series, tailored for both individuals and group discussions.

  • Unclear about what public engagement can do for your research? Check out the new Engagement Bites lunchtime talks, the first of which asks 'What's the value of public engagement?' on 26 April.

  • Need guidance on your CV and covering letters? Careers Service will hold a Quickfix 30-minute talk tailored specifically for PGRs on the basics of academic and non-academic CVs and covering letters on 9 May.

  • Careers Service are running a bespoke workshop for Biomedical and Health Sciences PGRs focusing on how to be an Enterprising Researcher: Innovation and University IP. on 10 May, from 10am to 4pm. You will examine the relevance of enterprise in the research process, and be exposed to university-based entrepreneurial activity.

  • Careers Service are running a bespoke workshop for Arts and Social Sciences PGRs focusing on how to be an Enterprising Researcher: Innovation and University IP. on 22 June, from 10am to 4pm.   • The Flowers Fellowship is now open for scientific or quantitative social science PhD students seeking a placement in science-policy work at Westminster. Apply by 14 May.

  • Public Engagement are looking for researchers to lead workshops for Year 10 pupils through the Cabot Learning Federation conference on 20 June. Workshops can be based on any subject and are particularly welcomed from Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences. For more information email Ellie Cripps.

Updates from your wider Bristol research community
  • The University Board of Trustees, the governing body of the University, has a vacancy for two Student Trustees to join them. This is an excellent opportunity for PGRs with leadership roles in the SU, University or local community. Find out more and apply by 9am, 10 April.

  • The Easter Egg Appeal is back! The Graduate School of Education are collecting Easter eggs and small gifts to donate to Bristol Children's Hospital to brighten up sick children's Easter weekend. Drop off by 13 April at either the Student Funding Office in Senate House or Student Services Office in 35 Berkeley Square.

  • An 80,000 word thesis would take 9 hours to present. Our 3MT semi-finalists have three minutes! Check out their skills and show support for our 24 contestants on 28 April from 3 to 5pm in the Reception Rooms, Wills Memorial Building. Tickets via Eventbrite.

  • Registration is now open for Research without Borders 2017! Sign up for free to attend any of the evening discussion series, running May 8-11 in the Life Sciences Building, and the showcase exhibition afternoon on May 12 at Colston Hall.

  • Don't forget to share your opinions on researcher life at Bristol by filling out the PRES survey by 30 April. It only takes 15 minutes and your feedback will help us to make ongoing improvements to the experience of all PGRs. There's even a bonus for schools and faculties who have high completion rates - so show your support and fill it in!

  • The GW4 Early Career Neuroscientist Day on 5 June is specially designed by and for those in the early stages of their neuroscience career and features talks on a wide range of topics from scientific techniques to alternative careers; from cellular neuroscience to public engagement.

  • Have you seen the ManKind campaign posters around campus? UG student Olivia Huxtable draws attention to male mental health and hopes to lift the stigma surrounding talking about mental health issues. Calls, calls, calls!

Calls for papers, conferences and funding
  • Being Human, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, takes place between 17-25 November 2017 on the theme of ‘Lost and found’. The festival provides an opportunity to share research in the humanities in fun and engaging ways with non-academic audiences. Apply to take part by 10 April.

  • The 6th Annual Conference of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Advanced Composites for Innovation and Science will be held in the Queen's Building, at the University of Bristol, on 11 April. Register now via eventbrite.

  • The long-standing Literary and Visual Landscape series presents 'Disrupted Landscapes', a symposium across all geographical and chronological time spans, on 14 June as one of the PGR Ventures Fund projects. The Call for Papers deadline has been extended to 14 April.

  • The GW4 announces 'Taming the Theoretical Beast', a one-day workshop on 10 June in Cardiff aiming to assist doctoral students in understanding, selecting and applying a Theoretical Framework to their research. places are available for up to 8 Bristol students to attend - submit an application by 23 April.

  • Are you working on your PhD in material technology within the field of metallurgy, processing and properties of advanced steel? Spend two weeks in the heart of the Swedish steel industry with the Nordic Summer Colloquium on Advanced Steel. Find out more and apply by 24 April.

  • Call for delegates at the Breaking Boundaries interdiscplinary conference for postgraduate researchers in Humantities and Social Sciences on 27 April. Free to attend but pre-registration necessary.

  • Thinking Futures, the University's festival to share and celebrate research in the social sciences, returns this November. Applications are now open for expressions of interest. Deadline to apply is 5 May.

  • Big Bang Bristol, two day science, technology, engineering, and maths fair that will take place 6-7 July at the Trinity Centre, is looking for students and researchers to present hands on demonstrations. For more information visit their website or get in touch.

What's on in Bristol

Take a break from your research 
  • In association with the Festival of Ideas, Sayeeda Warsi delivers 'The enemy within - a tale of Muslim Britain' on 11 April. Warsi, the child of Pakistani immigrants who became the UK’s first Muslim Cabinet minister, will explore questions of cultural difference, terrorism and religious freedom. Free to attend but booking is required.

  • Pervasive Media Studio, a community based in the Watershed of over 100 artists, creative companies, technologists and academics, hold regular Friday Lunchtime talks each week by their collaborators. Check out their upcoming 'It Must Have Been Dark by Then' on 21 April, about documentary, storytelling, and remote locations.

  • In association with At-Bristol, researchers at UoB are organising March for Science on the 22 April in Millenium Square to bring together the local community in support of Bristol's research. The organisers are looking for demonstrations, hands-on activites or talks to the event. Contact Matthew Lee if interested.

  • Pint of Science organise intriguing and relevant events about scientific subjects that anyone can attend. They return to Bristol 15 to 17 May across 8 Bristol venues, including Rise, Greenbank and Good Chemistry Brewing. Check out their line-up and book early!

  • From 10th April, Microsoft Office 2016 will be automatically installed on staff University managed computers. If you wish to install it now you can, by following the self-service instructions. Lecture theatre and student PCs will be updated over the Summer. Further information.
