Issue 57: 06 April 2017

Ms Ann Djedid
Head of Campus, Rayyan

Dear Parents,

This week, we had Jessica Meyer, our visiting Juilliard Music Specialist in school to lead workshops with children and work alongside Mrs Lerche. The children were treated to a Juilliard specialist lesson on exploring Bach’s dance rhythms, from the Cello Suite no.3. Throughout the year, almost all of our classes have had the opportunity to work with Ms Meyer and take advantage of the fantastic curriculum and expertise on offer. We have many budding musicians at Rayyan and look forward to building our instrumental programme next year, in addition to continuing to work with the choir and avail of the opportunities available both locally and regionally.

Practice Makes Perfect...

You may be aware that in his book Outliers, author Malcom Gladwell implies that if you want to be world class in music, sport, science, business or any chosen field, then you should aim to devote around 10,000 hours of practice to your chosen discipline. He also claims that if this 10,000 hour journey starts early in life, then you will have an even better chance of becoming as successful as Bill Gates or the Beatles. As with every piece of research there is a counter argument, but as a teacher at the Compass International School, I have the privilege of being surrounded by students and staff who have a desire to be the very best they can be.

LOST PROPERTY

Would all parents please go through lost property if your child has misplaced anything by the end of the last week of term.

The items that remain will then be cleared and donated to charity to start a fresh for the new term.

This has been a very hard task this term as things have been clearly labelled and returned only to end up back in Lost Property.

“Third Culture Kids”
A Difficult Journey but a Great Destination

Simon Porter shares his experiences and the research that has been done on children changing schools.  Read here about how frequent changes of school can have a negative impact on a child’s development and self-esteem.  On the other hand, moving around the world and experiencing different cultures can be a real benefit in the long-run.

A love of reading is a vitally important and the way we teach phonics in Early Years certainly helps to build on this joy and wonder. Some of the children have loved the lessons so much that they have begun to teach their classmates. Encouraging reading is essential and it is down to our wonderfully supportive parents that this has been made considerably easier. We are really thankful for the great parent volunteers that come to school to listen to our children read and for the fantastic parents who read each day with their children at home. Together we can continue to build a lifelong love of books in our children.
A High Note from the Music Department

Variety Evening
The audience on Monday was treated to a fabulous evening of music and drama. The primary choir kicked off the evening singing in beautiful two part harmony. The secondary choir and funk band each performed two sets and all of this was interspersed with soloists, drama sketches and an art exhibition. Many thanks to all the parents and friends who came to support the students and to all the staff who helped to make this event such a success.

Juilliard Visit
This week Jessica Meyer, our visiting curriculum specialist, paid her final visit of this academic year. Students were treated to composition workshops and Juilliard Creative Classroom lessons and parents were given an insight to the Juilliard approach to teaching and learning. We look forward to seeing Jessica again next year and our continued collaboration with The Juilliard School of Performing Arts.

Cambridge MOVERS Exam
On Wednesday, 5 April The EAL departments at Gharaffa and Rayyan combined to allow students to sit the Cambridge MOVERS exam. The ambitious students taking the exam were: Omar El Sayed, Sion Vanderbosch , Ayano Tagawa, Raghad Hasam, Ismail Hasam, Olivia Roejen and Alfonso Esteves from Gharaffa, and Duru Sunay, Jood Hamed and Shajzaib Aamer from Rayyan. The exam was the culmination of weeks of hard work and study during ECA time, led by Mike Glover at Rayyan, and Anna Andrzejewka with Beata Jarosova at Gharaffa. The results will, hopefully, be available in mid-May and certificates presented before the start of Ramadan. Thanks to Morag Paton for the use of the Gharaffa music room and to the British Council for helping CISD Gharaffa and Rayyan organise this exciting opportunity for our students to recognise their learning progress!
