Stage set for Ally Pally restoration

Major work on exciting plans to restore Alexandra Palace to its rightful place as one of London’s greatest cultural and heritage destinations got underway this week.

The multi-million East Wing restoration will see more than £26million ploughed into creating a spectacular new glazed roof above a learning and participation space in the East Court.

For the first time, visitors will be able to access a host of historical artefacts, including photographs and early film that were thought lost or destroyed.

The beautiful hidden Victorian Theatre is also being sensitively restored by heritage specialists and will host a full programme of performances, film screenings, live comedy and music.

The works have been welcomed by residents, restoration groups, the council and the Mayor of London.

Dumper in disguise

A brazen flytipper who dumped piles of rubbish in the street while disguised as a council worker has been convicted at crown court.

Roy Thompson, 52, was wearing a high-vis Haringey Council vest when he was spotted by a council manager ditching the waste beside a Texaco garage on White Hart Lane.

When confronted in a friend’s vehicle with the number plate taped over, Thompson claimed to work for the council, but his story quickly unravelled.

The following day, he was arrested at his home in Tottenham, where a council jacket was found stashed under a sink.

Thompson, who asked for his case to be heard before a jury at Wood Green Crown Court, went on the run before his trial started, but was found unanimously guilty in his absence.

Police have issued a warrant for Thompson’s arrest, and he will be sentenced once he is returned to court.

Shop front facelifts

A series of buildings and shop fronts in Tottenham will be restored to their former glory thanks to a £2.3million partnership between the council, local businesses and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Townscape Heritage Initiative will see 28 historic buildings given a makeover, while an activity programme at Bruce Castle Museum will help boost awareness of the area’s rich history through training, apprenticeships and events for local schools.

The first phase of the project will kick off this summer with historic conservation experts Cuttle Construction and Survey and Design architects leading the work.

Promoting workplace wellbeing

Mental health charity Mind has given Haringey Council a bronze award for its commitment to workplace wellbeing.

Haringey is the only council to have scooped the award, which recognises its work to reduce stigma and discrimination associated with mental ill health, promote emotional wellbeing and help employees to manage stress effectively.

Mind’s Workplace Wellbeing Index is a benchmark of best policy and practice, designed to celebrate good work of employers to support positive mental health.

Support for stress

A free workshop offering practical support for managing stress is being offered by the Haringey Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) NHS service.

The workshop will offer an opportunity for people to learn about what makes them stressed – from family relationships to money and work – and find ways of better coping with issues.

NHS clinicians will also offer practical advice on relaxation and tips on dealing with stress.

The workshop will take place on Wednesday 19 April from 6.30-7.30pm at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre, Philip Lane, N15.
