Meet the Editor

Oretha Manu will graduate in spring 2017 with her Bachelor of Science in communications with a concentration in public relations from Bowie State University. Oretha will start at American University Washington College of Law in fall 2017 to pursue her Juris Doctor degree concentrating in International and Comparative Environmental Law. She currently works as a PR Intern in the University Relations and Marketing department of Bowie State where she spends time writing for the University newsletter BSYou and creating engaging content for the University's social media accounts.

Bowie State Public Relations Student Society of America

On Monday, April 10, the APR Group helped the Bowie State chapter of PRSSA host a lifestyle and entertainment networking event titled "Run the Show". The event featured PR professionals in the fashion and entertainment industries: Candice Nicole, CEO of Candice Nicole PR; Anwaa King, CEO of DCWKLY; Nikki Osei-Barrett ('09), CEO of Osei PR; and DJ C-Stylez all served as guest panelists. Students also spoke to the panelists one-on-one while enjoying light refreshments.

Black Public Relations Society of Washington, D.C.

Throughout the semester, Finan Tesfai and Kamal Cook worked with APR Group client, the Black Public Relations Society of Washington, D.C. (BPRS), Antonice Jackson, president. They created social media content for BPRS to promote upcoming events like their Executive Meet and Greet event that was held on April 20. The event was held at PR agency Fleishman Hillard's DC offices and was a part of BPRS #3rdThursdaysPR events.

Scholastic Olympics

The APR Group has been working with a new client, The Scholastic Olympics, Tamara Henry, PhD, founder, to help drive high school student participation. Its annual competition tests students in four key areas: spelling, speech, math and U.S. history. The APR Group team members went to area high schools and spoke to students during class about the Scholastic Olympics competition. They also created the "Major Key to Success" campaign which connected with the younger target audience on Twitter and Instagram.

Bowie State's Intramural and Recreational Sports Program (IRSP) and Gemz Inc.

The APR Group joined forces with new client Bowie State Intramural and Recreational Sports Program, Mark Gutherie, coordinator, to increase awareness about campus fitness programs. On Thursday, April 20, the APR Group set up a promotional table and used social media to promote the future Kickboxing class event on May 2, 2017.

The APR Group also assisted in creating content for new client GEMz, Inc., a mentoring group for girls ages 11-18. The Group created articles for Gemz, Inc.'s online newsletter and helped expand the media contact list for the organization.

Pulse Praise

Darnisha Johnson, APR Group Team Leader and BSU PRSSA President, was selected as a Corporate Advisory Fellow at Hill+Knowlton Strategies, a global public relations agency.

Oretha Manu, Newsletter Editor, was chosen as the winner of Bowie State's College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Communications Scholar Award.
