Assembly this Sunday!

Sunday, April 9th 10:30AM
The Arts Center
300-G East Main St. Carrboro NC 27510

Explore the science of implicit bias and unconscious racism and discuss its effect on criminal justice decision-making, from police, to attorneys, to judges, to juries, to policy makers. Our speaker this month is Rob Wall of NC Comission on Racial and Ethnic Disparities (NC-CRED).  NC-CRED is dedicated to understanding how racial minorities are disproportionately represented in the criminal and juvenile justice systems.

We'll have songs, readings and community time too! We'll also be collecting donations of food for the food bank. We're excited to announce that our awesome kids activities will be continuing in a separate space so that the kids can really explore how to live better, help often, and wonder more.

Please join us! You can RSVP on Meetup or Facebook.

Music for Sunday
We've assembled this handy YouTube list for this Sunday's songs:
  • Everyday People
  • Put a Little Love in your Heart
  • The Way It Is
  • Man in the Mirror
Our May Mother's Day Assembly will feature an All-Ages Talent Show! Sign up here to share your amazing or amazingly fun talent. So far we have jugglers, the nutcracker suite, and original songwriting. What talent can you share?

Upcoming Events

We'd love to see you at any of these events! Click the link to RSVP on Meetup so we know to look for you.
  • Tuesday, April 25th, 7pm - Conversation Group: For this meeting let's take a look at how ethics/morals/virtues have developed in our own lives. Consider the earliest memory you have of an ethical conflict—your first ethical experience, your first struggle with embodying virtue or your values  Were there critical events, transitions, upsets in your life that had deep or lasting effects on your ethics?
  • Wednesday, April 26th, 7:30pm - Trivia Night: Test your knowledge of random facts and enjoy delicious pizza at the same time! Trivia starts 8 and usually runs an hour to an hour and a half. You can win gift cards to Tomato Jake's, as well as the undying respect of your fellow assemblyers!
  • Sunday, April 30th, 10am - Walk at Duke Gardens: We're moving our hiking events to the mornings as it's going to start getting hot in the afternoons! The Sarah P. Duke Gardens is home to countless species of local and imported flora spread across 55 acres. We'll admire the lovingly curated collections of plants while enjoying a partially shaded and leisurely walk. This walk will be comfortable for all ages and levels of mobility. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed in the gardens between 10am and 6pm.
  • Sunday, May 7th, 1:30pm - EHST Panel Discussion: Our friends at the Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle are putting together a panel discussion for millennials (adults in their 20's - mid-30's) to discuss the current political climate and its impact on their lives. If you're interested in participated, please check out the Meetup page.

Help Out!

Want to help out your assembly? Let us know! You can reply to this email to get in touch with the organizational team. We can use help with the following:

  • Ideas for speakers, readings, or songs - the organizing team are happy to find speakers, readings, moments of science, or themes for an assembly, but we're even happier to include your ideas. The more voices that are heard on stage, the better!
  • Hosts, readers, or singers - make your voices heard in a very literal way by getting up on stage. Don't worry, Sunday Assembly members make the most supportive audience ever!
  • Greeters or welcomers - we can always use help getting people oriented when they come in. We also like to have designated people to introduce themselves to newcomers and help them feel welcomed.
  • Setup or breakdown volunteers - those chairs won't unfold themselves!
  • Snack-bringers - bring along something healthy and/or tasty to share with everyone.
