I do not remember what I was dreaming about, but all of a sudden I was gasping for air. And in my frantic efforts to stay alive, I woke up and found it was not a dream. Was I having a panic attack or apnea episode? The VA has not awarded me on either condition but to be fair, I go months without incident. So I spent the next three hours scared to return to sleep, but I was overjoyed to begin another Project Hero Challenge, sponsored by United Healthcare, where 100 other healing heroes were cycling hundreds of miles. Today's event (03 April), even kicked off with my being asked to give an interdenominational morning reflection, and my message was on having a prophetic vision or goal, for which to live (Proverbs 29:18).

After the reflection and during the ride, several veterans opened up to me. Often, veterans are even shy with each other about issues, but when a female told me how long she served, I knew it was one year short of a typical contract. Did you finish your term, or did something happen? She said there was a traumatic incident (means she was assaulted); we rode and talked, about other things. Another veteran crashed their bike hard during the ride, and I witnessed it… user error. Yet instead of cycle far away, I helped push them for several miles. And a final veteran told me they just recently were released from suicide watch… about 22 veterans take their life each day, but that veteran (now) has a vision, and renewed reason to live.
