New 1.Question Interview Below: Brady Barke // Athletic Director // Southeast Missouri State (Part I)

Last night's 'One Shining Moment' (link)
North Carolina MBB HC Williams after his third National Championship & the sixth overall for the Tar Heels, "...the last three or four years have been very hard. I told you, people have questioned my integrity, and that means more to me than anything. I know that we did nothing wrong. I know that I did nothing wrong. I've been investigated 77 times, it seems like. And everybody came to that conclusion. But there were some mistakes made at my university that I'm not happy about either. But there's also, it always says for little or no work, and that's not true, or that for classes that weren't classes, and that's not -- they were taught differently. And whether I approve of it or not it makes no difference. But it's been there. It's been harder to recruit. We've lost about everybody that we tried because the sensationalism of the newspapers. I mean, I had to start defending myself four years ago. And I used to say that I hoped that it was over with before I retired. Now I'm saying I hope it's over with before I die. So I'm not that happy about that part of it. [...] But this team that I had last year and this year's had nothing to do with that. And the things that have been put in the paper have been very harmful and very hurtful. But that's what it is. Let's please, I'm not telling you what questions to ask. I'll answer any dadgum question you want. But please I would like you try to focus on what with these kids have accomplished instead of something that somebody did 24 years ago." More. (link)
More from Glendale as the media had a field day on what they viewed as sub-par officiating & game flow. USA Today's Armour: "What had the makings of a wildly entertaining finish became — FWEEE! — an interminable slog Monday night as officials called 11 fouls — FWEEE! — in the first four-plus minutes — FWEEE! — of the second half and 27 over the — FWEEE! — last 20 minutes. Both teams were in the bonus — FWEEE! – with 14 minutes left, bringing the game’s flow and pace — FWEEE! — to a grinding — FWEEE! FWEEE! FWEEE! — halt. Just reading that makes you want to beat your head against the wall, doesn’t it? Now imagine trying to play through it. In the biggest game of your careers, no less." (link); ESPN's Medcalf: "Forget the victory and the significance of the moment for champion North Carolina and national runner-up Gonzaga, because we must start with this: Monday night's national championship game -- beset by an abundance of foul calls, poor offense and a sleep-inducing rhythm -- stunk. For everyone." (link); Even NBA stand-out James tweeted his frustration, "Man I can't watch this anymore man! I would like to see the kids decide who wins the game! I mean Bruh!! Smh." (link); USA Today's Berkowitz notes UNC HC Williams will take home $925K in bonus money given his team's accomplishments in the Tourney, bringing his total over the last two years to $1.6M. Buffalo announces the elimination of Baseball, Men's Soccer, Men's Swimming & Diving and Women's Rowing, effective at the end of the spring athletic season. The move, which reduces the number of UB athletic programs from 20 to 16, will better align the school with its MAC peers in terms of which sports and how many are sponsored, according to officials. AD Greene: "We operate in a hypercompetitive environment and are not immune to the financial challenges facing programs at our level. ... While we continue to look for ways to mitigate rising costs, we will roll up our sleeves and enhance our efforts to better educate our community about the importance of ticket sales and philanthropy." (link); Buffalo News Senior Sports Columnist Sullivan: "The top women's rowing coach in the world is from Buffalo. A Buffalo woman won the area's first rowing gold in Rio. But UB drops the sport." (link); Meanwhile, Missouri State announces it will eliminate Field Hockey as one of a series of cuts being undertaken to reduce expenses by $1M. MSU will replace the program with Beach Volleyball, resulting in net annual savings of roughly $300K. AD Moats called the decision a "last resort" while Prez Smart observes that it's a "tough, tough market right now, with expenses skyrocketing. ... There was no easy decision to make." (link)
Arizona State's Sports Law & Business Graduate Program hosted an impressive collection of leaders, given their attendance for the MBB title game, yesterday morning in Tempe at its annual symposium. You'll have to scroll down a bit, but program Executive Director & notable thought-leader Wong covered the panels quite well within his own Twitter feed. Pac-12 Commish Scott says it's "unwise to say conference realignment is over." More Scott: "History will show that the big inflection point (in autonomy formation) was response to pressures." Richmond AD Gill: "Whether schools/institutions want to stay together/share same values will decide future of NCAA membership." Gill also says student-athlete transfer rules may be a key point of policy conversations moving forward. Lots more. (link); Houston Prez Khator was in attendance & a picture with Pac-12 Commish Scott brought speculation. (link); Here's a read from ASU in review of the panel involving Khator, West Virginia Prez Gee & Ohio State AD Smith. (link)
Dartmouth has received a $5M gift from the family foundation of Ed and Barbara Haldeman to endow the AD position, which will help expand the AD's "ability to invest in programs and innovations that boost Dartmouth’s competitive advantage and enhance the student-athlete experience." The endowment means AD Sheehy, whom the Haldemans have known for almost two decades, will now become the Haldeman Family Director of Athletics and Recreation. Ed Haldeman, former Freddie Mac CEO and a past chairman of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees: "A distinguishing characteristic of Dartmouth is how important athletics are to a large number of our students. Because athletics have been so important to our family and because we think Harry is the model of what we want in an athletic director, we’re delighted to endow the position." (link)
Penn is now the first Ivy League school to take the “It’s On Us” pledge against sexual violence. Women's Fencing Student-Athlete Marcus was instrumental in making the school's "It's On Us" video and bringing awareness about the campaign to campus: “I decided that Penn should be a leader and step up and stand against sexual violence as something that is unacceptable. Here at Penn Athletics we as student-athletes recognize that we have the power to make a change here." (link)
NCAA officiating coordinator Collins insists that MBB referee and crew chief Higgins earned his spot officiating Saturday's Final Four matchup between Gonzaga and South Carolina, following the previous weekend's hotly contested regional final between Kentucky and North Carolina. "(Higgins's) regional performance justified this." Collins adds that, in response to death threats allegedly made against him, the NCAA "went above and beyond" to provide Higgins with additional security. As to whether NCAA officials are overworked, with many also employed full-time elsewhere, Collins disputes the notion with anecdotal evidence from his own days as a referee and says it would be cost-prohibitive for the NCAA to hire officials full-time. MBB HCs including Michigan State's Izzo and Saint Joseph's Martelli express sympathy for referees and call the repercussions leveled against Higgins by Kentucky fans inappropriate. UNC MBB HC Williams: "We are providing entertainment. And for it to go to that extent to a very good referee, who has had a very good career, that was pretty harsh." Williams adds that he's held a grudge against a referee since 1981 but declined to provide the referee's identity. (link)
After receiving pushback from Northwestern, the B1G has agreed to move the school's two previously scheduled Friday games to Saturday, but says the conference will still play four games on Friday nights next season. Northwestern FB HC Fitzgerald, who calls the change "great news," had argued that Friday night games take away from high school football and disrupt the class and practice schedules of student-athletes. He adds: "I didn't get a say in whether or not we were playing on Fridays. ... The other head coaches, I don't think we had a vote. It wasn't ever discussed with us. I get it. I understand it. It doesn't mean I have to like it. But I know my role and I'll coach the team." (link)
University of Toronto professor Martin emphasizes the need for executives to make strategic choices simultaneously instead of sequentially within the context of his Strategy Choice Cascade framework, which is comprised of five questions: What is our winning aspiration? Where will we play? How will we win? What capabilities must we have? What management systems do we need? "Many people ask me why Capabilities and Management Systems are part of strategy when they are really elements of execution. That is yet another manifestation of the widespread, artificial, and unhelpful attempt to distinguish between choices that are 'strategic' and ones that are 'executional' or 'tactical.' Remember that, regardless of what name you give them, these choices are a critical part of the integrated set of five choices that are necessary to successfully guide the actions of an organization." Martin cites Microsoft's foray into the field of smartphone hardware as an example of a company that had defined a Where to Play strategy, but had "no useful conception of how that would be twinned with a How to Win -- and it lost spectacularly." Twitter is reportedly seeking partnerships with TV networks such as ESPN and Sky Sports which would allow subscribers to access those channels within the Twitter mobile app. The social media giant is looking to build on previous deals, including an agreement with ESPN to stream Wimbledon, a recent acquisition of NFL rights, and a partnership with Sky Sports to livestream coverage of the final day of England's soccer transfer window. Twitter COO Noto: "Bringing the video forward (onto Twitter itself) allows us to give the consumer on one screen the things they're talking about and a timeline of the best tweets on Twitter at that moment in time." Twitter has struggled to grow its user base in recent years, and is pushing live video as a way of increasing revenue while attracting more users. (link)

The South Carolina-Mississippi State WBB National Championship did a 2.4 national TV rating, up 20% from last year. Once again, we have another streaming record, as well. (link); Notable ESPN WBB analyst Burke pens on her decision to step away from the Women's game & reflects on the quality crew she's worked with & dynamic sport she's covered. "As I continue my own journey at ESPN – the rigors of travel and my commitment to be the best version of me on an ever-growing schedule of NBA and men’s college games – I am confident women’s basketball is in good hands, on-and-off the court." (link); SI's Deitsch believes Burke's sidekick & former Tennessee stand-out Lawson should "absolutely get the call as solo analyst for next year's Final Four." (link)
HC Notes: As you know by now, Georgetown AD Reed decides to go with alum & All-American Ewing to take over the Hoyas program. Ewing will make the transition after a long stretch as an AC in the NBA. (link); Arkansas' hire of Washington WBB HC Neighbors is official. (link); Lehigh Wrestling HC Santoro won't be going to Pitt. (link); Virginia Tech FB HC Fuente inks a two-year extension, which could keep him in Blacksburg through the 2023 campaign & will incrementally increase his base pay from $3.25M to $4M in '23. (link); Former Baylor MBB HC Bliss is no longer leading the program at Southwestern Christian (NAIA) after the airing of "Disgraced" doc that aired on Showtime last Friday. (link); Miami (OH) AD Sayler completes his hoops hires with the selection of Michigan AC Duffy as his new WBB HC. (link); Illinois State AD Lyons goes with Lewis (DII) HC Gillespie as new WBB HC for the Redbirds. (link); Southeastern Louisiana AD Artigues also makes a WBB HC hire, recruits St. Louis AC Guzzardo to take the reigns in Hammond. (link); Providence Field Hockey HC Madl signs an extension. (link); Auburn Softball AHC Myers, son of the Tigers HC, announces he's stepping away from the program. (link)
Kellogg's has extended its relationship with IMG College for another three years & adds 10 more schools to its marketing portfolio to bring the total moving forward to 25. IMG College EVP of Sales & Marketing Judelson: "Kellogg's is a brand that understands college sports fans' passion and the power of marketing at the national and university level. We are happy to continue working alongside Kellogg as their collegiate platform evolves in size and scope." (link)
Another trio of engaging entries from SBJ's latest edition, though they come with the standard warning of a strict pay wall. Key voices Smith & Ourand pen on the relationship between CBS & Turner as the pair has effectively co-produced & co-sold the NCAA MBB Tourney in a relationship many didn't think would work. This is a really good read. NCAA's Gavitt: "The relationship works because it’s good at every level (starting at the top). They communicate regularly, often by text. When you have leaders that are that well-connected, it’s a great starting point. All the way through the organizations, a level of trust has been built." (link); Former Michigan MBB student-athlete & longtime NBA presence Webber did a solid job in his Tourney analysis. Turner Prez Levy: "I think he is a superstar. He had some challenges, as you know, with the NCAA. It’s nice to see him back and doing these games." (link); Also, NFL owners have begun talking to Commish Goodell about the possibility of extending his contract beyond its current expiration date in March of 2019. (link)
Interesting couple of slides from Amazon Studios Head of Strategy Ball on the continued slips for TV engagement. From Q4 of last year, TV usage by the 12-24 age demo is down 40% since 2010, 65+ is the only demo up over that same period of time. A stout 53% of share of all minutes watched belongs to those 50 years of age & up. (link); @AdContrarian notes, from the same Nielsen deck that Ball references: "A quick glance shows that the quickly expanding amount of time we are spending with our smart phones (light orange) does not seem to be impacting the amount of time we are spending with broadcast media. While time spent with Smart Phones has more than doubled in 2 years, time spent with TV, DVR's and Radio is remarkably stable." (link)
An update on a topic regularly covered in this space given the ties of so many oil & energy executives to college athletics. The Wall Street Journal's Kent from yesterday, "Oil Companies’ Modest Prize: Breaking Even." Kent: "The firms are showing signs of improvement. For example, Shell and Exxon notched stronger quarters late last year. However, analysts point to challenges ahead as oil prices hover around $50 a barrel. BP says it will need oil at $60 a barrel to balance cash generation against capital expenditures and dividends, while Chevron is targeting $50 a barrel with the help of asset sales." Macquarie Capital Senior Analyst Reid: "Since the oil price collapsed, it’s been all about who’s fastest down the road to breaking even. In the short term, it’s all about cash flow because people are still worried about the dividend." (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
The Times Free Press profiles the first 72 hours for new Tennessee AD Currie, who officially began his current stint in Knoxville on Saturday. His first move? Coffee with FB HC Jones on Saturday morning, followed by attending baseball and softball games over the weekend and a full slate of radio interviews and meetings on Monday. FAR Bruce, who introduced Currie at the faculty senate meeting yesterday afternoon, "elated" that Currie was Chancellor Davenport's pick. The former Kansas State AD spoke with every Vols head coach within 48 hours of accepting the job and plans to hold face-to-face meetings with each in the next few weeks. Currie: "Right now, I'm not spending a whole lot of time decorating the office or anything. I'm really just walking around seeing people." (link)
Western Illinois AD Tanney names Quincy (DII) Assoc. AD for Compliance & Internal Operations/SWA Surprenant as a new Senior Assoc. AD/SWA for the Leathernecks. Surprenant has spent the last seven years with the Hawks. Tanney: "(Surprenant's) prior senior-level leadership experiences at other NCAA institutions is a welcome addition to the department. ... She demonstrated during the interview process, that in her role as Senior Woman Administrator, she will serve as a great advocate and administrative resource for our sport programs." (link)
Some donors at Cal are reportedly "furious" over the hiring of MBB HC Jones; specifically, some are displeased with AD Williams's lack of communication with them as well as his decision not to hire an outside firm, relying instead on an internal search committee. A foundation member at a rival Pac-12 school tells the San Francisco Chronicle: "Talking to the donors is in the job description of every athletic director in a major university, but Williams had zero communications with them." The Chronicle also reports that a "decades-long booster" sent Williams an angry note, canceling his 14 season tickets to MBB and severing ties with the athletics department altogether. Berkeley spokesman Benenson: "We feel good about the way we conducted the search. We spoke with dozens of donors throughout the process and took feedback on what they'd like to see in our next head coach." (link)
You'll want to take a glance at these survey results from Google on what's "cool" to teens today. Of particular note is the chart on page 12 that ranks brands on a scale of awareness & coolness. Wining on both markers are the likes of Nike, YouTube, Google, Netflix, Apple, Playstation, Xbox, Doritos & Chrome. At the other end: Vice, Line, Quicksilver, Virgin America, Sunglass Hut, Nordstrom & others. For Millenials 18-24, Nike, Amazon, YouTube, Netflix & Google are major winners. There's a ton here & you make want to take a deeper dive in your next external meeting. (link)
Smack Apparel Company produced a Carolina blue tee-shirt with the words "Yo Grayson... Why You Trippin?" clearly a jab at Duke's MBB student-athlete who was suspended earlier this season for tripping opponents. Duke, via Olive and Olive P.A., sent a cease and desist letter to Smack Apparel: "Mr. Allen has not consented, and does not consent, to such use; nor has he authorized any agent or other person to grant consent to you for such use." Because the shirt shows the torso of a male basketball player wearing jersey No. 3, the letter also advises Smack that using Allen's image for commercial production is forbidden. Owner Curtiss takes issue with the cease & desist. (link)

For an Athletic Director, there's arguably no more important relationship than the one he or she has with their President or Chancellor. In today's 1.Question, Southeast Missouri State AD Brady Barke reflects on the path he took to the top spot in Cape Girardeau, which included serving as Chief of Staff for one President, then interim & later permanent AD for the next. Barke also talks about how he became comfortable with the approach to Athletics by current President Carlos Vargas. Listen by clicking the link. - link (length - 5:20)
