Finding the Yellow Car
Years ago, I worked for an advertising agency in New York City. My boss at the time had a habit of walking into meetings and asking, "Have we found the yellow car yet?" It was his way of asking if anyone had come up with an interesting, creative idea.

I was reminded of this the other day when I heard that noted children's book author and filmmaker, Amy Krouse Rosenthal, had lost her battle with cancer. One of the short films she created during her career was called 17 Things I Made, (which eventually became a longer short, if you will, called The Beckoning of Lovely). In the original, Amy made 17 things, and then invited her viewers to meet her on 8/8/08 at 8:08 p.m. in Chicago's Millennium Park to join her in making "a cool 18th thing." She explained in the film they would know who she was because she'd… "be the one holding a yellow umbrella."

In addition to her many award-winning children's books, including Duck! Rabbit!, Little Pea, Little OinkSpoon, and I Wish You More, Amy was a prolific filmmaker and TED speaker. Here's a neat TED talk she gave called The Crevices of Life.

Her kind, intelligent, creative ideas will be sorely missed.

Aaron Stamper was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic t-cell 2 leukemia two days before his 13th birthday. A year later, tragedy struck the family again when Aaron's older brother Ethan died in an automobile accident. Kentucky State Trooper Lt. Felder and maintenance supervisor Howard Sweat recently installed a new, larger mailbox to hold all of Aaron's birthday cards.

“Whatever it is you are hoping to do, hoping to make, hoping to make happen, it is more likely to manifest itself when you stop waiting for the right moment in this great expanse of time, and start dipping into the fractured but endlessly available crevices of life—for they are tiny, but mighty, golden fireballs, just waiting for our attention and touch.”

About Me

Hi. I’m D.E.Uhlig. I’m an artist, author, husband and father.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved to draw. Years ago I gave my wife a hand-drawn card for our anniversary, and she loved it so much she made me promise to ALWAYS hand-draw her cards. Then our three kids made me promise to do the same with their birthday cards. And when I posted some of my drawings online, people began asking how they could purchase my work—so I created this newsletter. I believe in something I like to call “The Happiness of Art” and I hope it makes you smile.
