Michigan’s Per-pupil Funding Equity Gap
Michigan’s charter school students, on average, receive less in per-pupil funding than their traditional public school peers. This gap in funding has only continued to widen in recent years. Organizations such as the Michigan Council of Charter School Authorizers and the Michigan Association of Public School Academies are continuing to advocate for equitable funding at the state level. CMU Center for Excellence in STEM Education has Opportunities for Students and Teachers
There are events coming up for students and teachers through CMU’s Center for Excellence in STEM Education. For teachers, there are spring and summer professional development opportunities available. For students, the program offers summer camps for fourth grade through ninth grade. For more information on all of the offerings, click here
Reminder: Celebrate Charter Schools in Lansing on May 3
As part of National Charter Schools Week, May 3 is Charter Day at the Capitol. The event is a great opportunity to visit Lansing and celebrate charters by sharing your story with state legislators. The day will include a rally at the capitol with Kevin Chavous and legislative meetings. Mr. Chavous was the keynote speaker at the Center’s 2016 Annual Conference and has an inspiring message about providing quality educational options to students. The opportunity is open to students, parents, teachers, school leaders and community members. For more information and to register, click here.

Spirit of the Future Scholarships
Eligible graduates of CMU-authorized charter public high schools have the opportunity to apply for scholarships to attend CMU.  Read more
Charter School Educator Award
Eligible educators and school leaders at CMU-authorized charter public schools can receive 50 percent tuition assistance for eligible graduate programs at CMU.  Read more
College of Education and Human Services
Links direct you to specific Centers and Departments within the College that have resources that can drive performance, enhance capacity and create opportunities at all levels of the K-12 community.  Read more

Charter School Teacher and Administrator of the Year Finalists Announced
The Michigan Association of Public School Academies recently announced the finalists for the 2017 Michigan Charter School Teacher and Administrator of the Year awards. The Center would like to congratulate the CMU-authorized charter public schools’ staff members that were given this statewide recognition. For a list of finalists from our schools, click here.
Jalen Rose Leadership Academy Seniors Receive Prestigious CMU Scholarship
Teion Howard and Engram Marcum, both seniors at Jalen Rose Leadership Academy, recently received news that they were each selected as one of 40 students that will join CMU’s Leader Advancement Scholars cohort in the fall of 2017. This is a tremendous accomplishment for these students to be chosen for such a prestigious program at CMU and speaks to their leadership abilities and service. Rep. Cochran Visits Great Lakes Cyber Academy and Nexus Academy of Lansing
Two Lansing-area schools received a visit recently from their state representative. Rep. Tom Cochran met with Nexus Academy of Lansing students to discuss some of his legislation and have in-depth dialogue where students talked about issues that were important to them and their families. Earlier that morning, he visited Great Lakes Cyber Academy to celebrate March is Reading Month by reading to middle school students during a live lesson. This was a great opportunity for Rep. Cochran to experience a class at a cyber school.
