Spring Concert Tomorrow!
A reminder that our Spring Concert is tomorrow, Thursday, April 6th. The students are working hard in both choir and orchestra to prepare a wonderful evening of music! Students performing in orchestra should arrive no later than 5:30pm to warm up. All students performing in choir should arrive no later than 5:45pm. The concert begins at 6pm.

As this is the only after-school event required by the music program, we ask that all students’ grades 5-8 prioritize this concert above their usual Thursday evening activities. It is important that all grades have full attendance to support each other on stage.

Students are to wear their class colors in combination with black and white. Students performing in orchestra must be able to remove or cover their colorful item of clothing easily to perform in black and white for orchestra. Class colors are as follows:

Grade 5: Yellow
Grade 6: Red
Grade 7: Blue
Grade 8: Purple

Also, if any parent is able to volunteer as the designated videographer and share the recording of this concert with parents and staff, please contact the choir director, Kathleen Austin, at: kmamusic144@gmail.com. We would like to have one designated person to record with a quality camera and stationary tripod, so that others can enjoy the concert without distraction.
Many thanks, Kathleen Austin

Next Parent Education Event –save the date!
Mark your calendars, on Wednesday, April 26th Ben Klocek will be coming to SunRidge to discuss the following topic: Transforming Habits of Tech: Creating a World that Reflects the Heart. This will be a presentation and discussion to explore what we can do to prepare ourselves and our children to thrive in the digitally-focused world, without sacrificing imagination, creativity, deep-thinking, presence, and our relationships.

As we cope with the unprecedented convergence of ubiquitous, sophisticated, alluring, habit-forming screen technology, taking time to reflect on the quality of our daily experience can lead to new ways of being, where we are masters of our tech, instead of its servants. We will explore ways to form healthy tech habits for you and your children.
Library News
A mushroom in the library? Yes, indeed! We want to thank Cheryl Koskela for donating the bright red and white mushroom stool she purchased through the on-line auction to be used in our library. And, thank you first grade parents for making it!  The children are enjoying having a soft spot to sit on while reading a book and it gives some color to our picture book area.

Our library is such a warm and rewarding space with new books being added weekly by our volunteers who continue to enter the books in our digital system that Michael Powell, Director of Library Services, channeled our way.  Some children are having a hard time waiting for books that are in the boxes waiting to be entered!

So, if you'd like to learn how to enter books, please come to our weekly library meeting on Thursdays from 9:15 - 11:00am and we'll show you how!  Or, send Dianne Namkung an email expressing your interest and she'll arrange a time to teach you at your convenience. diannenamkung@gmail.com. Thanks!
Honoring Ms. Kate
Kate O’Brien is an exemplary Kindergarten teacher. Our whole community has been enriched by her service and dedication. She has taught kindergarten, mentored new teachers and provided leadership for over 30 years. The Rotary Club of Sebastopol honored Kate as one of the 2016-17 West Sonoma County Teachers of the Year. Kate gave a beautiful speech surrounded by Kalen, Theresa, and Holly as well as many other members of the community. Congratulations Kate!
Why we do tardies the way we do…
If students arrive after the bell rings we ask that they check-in at office before they head to their class. The reason for this is as follows:

1. Accuracy of record.
2. Clipboard may be turned into the office before the student arrives therefore the teacher would not be able to record the tardy.
3. Safety –if a class is on a walkabout we will know and keep the child in the office.
Safe Haven Resolution
Please click here to see required posting of Twin Hills Union School District Recognition of A Safe Haven from our Superintendent, Barbara Bickford.
March in the Garden
As the ground warms up, plants uncurl from their winter blankets, and life begins to flitter and reflect the excitement of spring. My heart lightens to see the daisy chains being hung, and seeing our strong kids thin the trees with gusto, leaving giant mounds to remind us of the work they have done. The bulbs have started popping up, and the sprouts have begun to reach for the sun. Now we transition to chores, a continual cycle of watering, weeding, and sweeping.

One of our beautiful oaks will soon be adorned with hanging logs, with a secret promise of shiitake mushrooms. Our fruit trees on the hillside above the back parking lot have begun to bud. I hope to add logs and boulders and plant many squash and peas here. As the logs and boulders wait in mounds to be placed the children have naturally made it their new playground. Our tomatoes will be going in, as we pass the equinox and the threat of frost seems to be behind us. The grounds are being cleared for the third grade to spread their corn seed, and we are finding the space to sow the wheat.

More on what’s where…
  • Under the shade structure by the garden shed we are creating a vertical garden with standing columns soon to contain potatoes, oca, and strawberries.
  • Along the Kinder wall are a variety of.
  • The raised beds will soon be prepped for corn. In the future, sunflowers and corn will look in through the dragonfly kindergarten windows. The beds in the kitchen garden, located right outside the office, hold lettuce and leeks as well as numerous medicinal herbs (Mint, Thyme, Oregano, Savory, Sage, Marjorum, Onion, Garlic, Chives, Lemon Balm, and Basil). Thank you to Sasha Prosser and her dedicated team (especially Caleb Bush) for removing the crab grass in library garden area.
Thank you to all the parents who volunteered. Below is a schedule of classes if you’d like to join us:
  11:00- 12:35   1:15- 2:50
Monday 1st 5th

At Solstice Yoga and Farm Camp we provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can strengthen their sense of confidence, focus, breath, creativity, physical awareness and appreciation of their whole being and the natural world through yoga, movement, music, art, farming, nature, and exploring plants.

Yoga awakens the children's creativity and intrinsic love of exploring their bodies inspired by animals and the natural world. Each day there is a theme or focus that threads through all of the activities. Activities are inspired by the yogic intention of breathing, focusing, creativity, peace, and awareness. Instructors are Kelly Schwartz-Deal, and Lauren Ohlsen, who are both credentialed teachers as well as Meryl Juniper, a well-known local art teacher. Together they lead offering support and encouragement for the exploration of yogic movement and technique, artistic creativity, movement and musical expression, and experiences with nature.

Two Rats Need A Home
We have two adorable young pet rats that we recently purchased from a family-owned pet store in Santa Rosa. They are very sociable and make great pets but the problem is they are giving my wife and I allergies (I don't think this is very common and we are allergic to cats and dogs too) so we need to find a new home for them.  We are willing to give away for free the rats, a brand new large cage, and all of the accessories. Please contact Jeremy at jkobor@gmail.com or 707-483-2271 if you're interested in adopting these little guys. Thank you.
