ShopBotters in the News

Woodshop News Article "A New Hope in Ohio" Features Father and Son ShopBotters

April's edition of "Woodshop News" features an article about Rick and Bryan Chmura in Independence, Ohio. It tells the story of how Chmura Custom Woodworks invested in a ShopBot PRSalpha, initially to become more efficient in their cabinet making endeavors, but found themselves using their CNC for far more than cabinetry work.

To read more about the Chmuras' story, and see what they're doing with their ShopBot, see the full article on the Woodshop News website.

CNC in Theatre: ShopBot at USITT

From March 8-11, ShopBot visited the 2017 USITT Symposium in St. Louis. The event, held at America’s Center Convention Complex, is the country’s premier technical theater exposition, gathering the latest in tools, technology, and products that are driving today’s theatre and live entertainment programs.

Read all about the show and how CNC is playing a starring role in theatre production in this entry of the ShopBot blog.

Bill Young's Dirty Digital Jobs Tour: Visiting Rural Studio

While on the recent leg of his Dirty Digital Jobs Tour that took him from Virginia to Austin, TX, Bill decided to stop by Rural Studio in Newbern, AL. “It was kind of on the way from Florida to Austin,” he says. Rural Studio is an outreach program of the Auburn architecture program, founded by Samuel Mockbee, that specializes in innovation in materials and design in affordable construction. He had stopped by there back in 2008 while on his way to the Austin Maker Faire and wanted to see how they were progressing.

Stop by the ShopBot blog to read about Bill’s visit, including photos, and to learn more about Rural Studio.

ShopBotters at Work

Wayne Locke's User Group

Each year, at his shop in Austin, TX, Wayne Locke holds a CNC User Group. It is, by far, the longest running gathering of Shopbotters and others that are interested in all things CNC-related. This year, it was held the weekend prior to SXSW, which means that with planning during his Dirty Digital Jobs Tour, Bill Young was able to attend while on his way to represent ShopBot at SXSW.

Attendees of the User Group aren’t just there for Show & Tell (though that’s always a part of these gatherings), but to learn from Wayne and others about their experiences with their ShopBots (or other CNC tools) and see the various processes they all have for creating things with their tools.

Read more about Bill’s observations of the event in his post on the ShopBot blog.

Our History, Our Future

Rosman High/Middle School Carpentry and Technology teacher Devin Wilson had the goal of building on the foundation of craftmanship, stewardship, and ownership that had been laid in previous years of the school’s program. One of the ways he’s done this is by introducing a ShopBot Desktop MAX into his classroom.

Read how guest blogger Devin Wilson is using CNC with his students and see photos of some of their work.

Back by Popular Demand: Digital Fabrication in Education Workshop

Last summer, Sallye Coyle ran a workshop here at ShopBot Tools in Durham, NC specifically for educators. The subject matter goes beyond learning about CNC and encompasses a number of different pieces of equipment and software applications, all a part of digital fabrication.

Last year's 2 1/2 day event was such a success, that she's doing it again and it is being offered 3 different times during the spring/summer: one each in May, June, and July.

For more details, as well as information on how to sign up for a session, please visit the ShopBot blog.
