Trail News & Information

Story Behind Spence Trail Names

Some trail names are obvious and some are not. Take for instance Spence Mt. South Ridge Trail.  This name reflects its geographic location and generally follows the south ridge line to the top of Spence Mountain.  Hooligan Trail is not as obvious, it is named after an old steam boat that roamed Klamath Lake in the early 1900’s.  Several of the planned trails at Spence will honor these old steamers that moved both people and freight back in the day before cars and trucks became the main mode of transportation.  Upcoming trails named after steam boats include Mazama and Captain Jack.  If you are into history, want to learn more about these old steamers, check out the Klamath Echoes publication from 1965.

Trail Conditions

The longer days and warmer weather have significantly improved local trail conditions.  In just the last week several trails have dried out enough to recreate on.

Moore Park has a few boggy or wet areas on lower Eulalona, Klamath Ridgeview Trail near Blueberry and KRVT between Big Sky and 5 Gallon.  For the most part, Moore Park is in decent shape if you stay away from the boggy areas.  Just remember, if you are leaving deep ruts please re-route to drier trails.

Spence Mountain is almost snow free below 5,000’ and the lower Spence loop is in great shape.  The soil at Spence Mountain drains better than Moore Park so early conditions there are less muddy. You will encounter significant snow on the South Ridge Trail above the summit road about 3 miles from the trailhead.

Note: this time of year trail conditions are highly variable and if there is a freeze/thaw cycle or significant moisture event conditions change fast.  For more information checkout trail condition pages on KTA’s Website Zach’s Bikes or Trail Forks.
Sole Trail Running Series

Springtime brings longer days and a yearly event for those who love to tread the trails on two feet: The Linkville Lopers Sole Trail Running Series. Things kicked off on March 30 at Moore Park, with a determined group of runners enjoying the sunshine and braving the wind.

This event is sponsored by Asana Yoga and Sole, and proceeds benefit the KTA, Friends of Moore Park and Linkville Lopers. Cost: $3 per race or $20 for a season pass.

“This is a great way to explore trail running if you are new to the sport,” the website and Facebook page about the event states. “It is also a great way to get in that hard run while training for you next event.”

This year races are happening every two weeks. Distances vary from 4K to 13K and terrain ranges from “flat to furious.” The race schedule is:
  • April 13: Moore Park 8K
  • April 27: Hogback Hill Climb 4K
  • May 11: Spence 10K
  • May 25: Running Y 8K
  • June 8: Moore Park 7K
  • June 22: Moore Park 8K
  • July 6: Spence Mountain 15K

Planting day planned for Oregon Tech Geo-Trail
From Herald and News brief

Community members are invited to a planting day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday along the Geo-Trail at Oregon Tech, according to a news release.

Participants will learn about native plant communities in the Klamath Basin and help beautify the newly developed trail with staff and volunteers from Oregon Tech, the Klamath Trails Alliance, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Sky Lakes Medical Center.

Volunteers will help plant native species around the trail and at a monarch butterfly pollinator station.

Participants are asked to bring a lunch, wear closed-toed shoes and work clothes, and to bring gloves if you have them. The Geo-Trail is at the northeast corner of the campus, at 3201 Campus Drive, near Sky Lakes Medical Center and across from the softball field. This event is weather permitting.
