The Easter Vigil

Dear St. V's,

Preparing for Holy Week and Easter, many helpers put their hands to many tasks (see our Easter Breakfast request, below).  Among them are the nine St. V's parishioners completing their Vigil presentations. Here are notes on this year's first and last Vigil hours.

The first hour, God’s Extravagant Creation, will consider the Creation story in light of what science tells us about the way the universe evolved. We see about 94 billion light-years worth of our still-inflating balloon of a universe. But we think it was once infinitesimally small, without space or time. This is the story of how we got from there to here in the most insanely creative act on record, and the over-the-top Creator who stuck us in it.

As dawn approaches, the final Vigil hour finds us chanting and meditating on The Psalms. The Psalms are truly the Church's prayer book, and Jesus himself prayed them during his life on earth. Hence, they ought to be an integral part of every Catholic's prayer life. We will learn how to sing a Psalm like the Benedictine Monks at Conception Abbey.

On this holy night, we keep watch, awaiting Christ's return in glory. While we wait, we recount the great stories of the history of salvation. We are thankful for those who tell these stories, and help us to reflect on them.

Tenebrae
Wednesday, April 12

At this service, lit candles are extinguished one by one after Scripture readings. The service ends in darkness. We use the strepitus (“great noise”) to symbolize the earthquake that followed Christ’s death and as the signal to depart in silence.
Seder
Thursday, April 13

In the Seder we recognize how, through faith, we enter into the very covenant God made with Israel. Remember that the Seder begins promptly at 6PM. Plan to be early to park, find your table and greet others there, and celebrate this old tradition with our new Pastor.
Your Help Needed for Easter Breakfast
Every year after the 8:30 Mass on Easter we welcome all to share in a hearty breakfast. We need your help for breakfast! To contribute food or volunteer your time, contact Bob Betta at bbetta48@gmail.com. Or sign up in the Gathering Space this Palm Sunday and take home a cooking pan.

We serve what you bring - suggested items are:
  • Stratta with meat or vegetables
  • Green beans, roasted potatoes or a side dish that is your specialty
Bring above items hot in an insulated “cooler” and ready to serve.
  • Hard boiled eggs; can be in shell, or peeled
  • Desserts or fruit
  • Juice, milk, iced tea
Above items should be ready to serve and arrive by 8 AM on Sunday.
  • Hams, bacon, sausage (all fully cooked)
Above items should arrive Saturday night so we can reheat on Sunday.

VOLUNTEERS are needed to help with set-up Sunday morning (6:30-8 AM), for serving the breakfast, and for clean-up afterwards.
