College Counseling Tips: Do Your Homework

Special to WWFHA, pro-staffer Kiersten Murphy of College Murphy Consultants – schoolconsultant.com

Seniors are seasoned pros by now, and are celebrating the good news of their college acceptances. A year from now, juniors will be in their place, having to decide next steps about where to enroll. If you haven’t already started to develop your college list, now is the time.

In addition to identifying your learning style (that is, what learning environment best suits you), your strengths, weaknesses, your admissibility (can you get in to a particular school? choose wisely!), potential for need-based aid (use the net price calculator to get an estimate) and college must have’s, you need to spend time getting to know your college choices by analyzing their websites.  Do they have what you want, does their philosophy and graduation requirements match your own, what opportunities will you have for internships or research, will you be able to continue special interests like hockey, music, leadership, etc.? Believe me, not all colleges are created equally and we want to find one that works best for you!

What do College Coaches Really look for in College Recruits?

The higher up the ladder you go in sports, the more you will find that there are always plenty of skilled, talented players competing for limited spots. So what do coaches at the next level really look for? You might be surprised.

Recently there was a press conference interview with University of Connecticut women's basketball head coach Geno Auriemma making the rounds on social media. The 11-time NCAA Division I women's basketball national champion (and seven-time Coach of the Year) talked about what he and his coaching staff look for in athletes that supersedes talent and stands as the absolute bedrock attributes required to win championships in team sports. While Auriemma is a basketball coach, the same holds true in our sport: Character counts, and it’s not just a cliché for programs that are successful.

Click here for great insight to what coaches are thinking and what they are really looking for in their players, listen to Coach Auriemma.

Ask WWFHA

Q: What are the ABC’s for 10U Players?

A: By the time we reach adulthood, many of us likely take for granted the basics of agility, balance and coordination. Today, they’re second nature. We forget that, when we were youngsters, those elements had to be learned over time.

Bob Mancini, a regional manager for USA Hockey’s American Development Model, has witnessed that progression in young hockey players and he has a message about the importance of training agility, balance and coordination in 10U hockey players.

“It’s the foundation of being a successful athlete in the long term,” he said. “Sometimes what we don’t realize is that these are things are substantially shaped at a young age. What we do with our hockey players at 10U is going to make a big difference in terms of what they’re going to be able to accomplish in their careers.”
