Dear Families,

We have completed another wonderful week at Saint Francis.  I am excited to share the 2017-2018 School Calendar with all of you.  I am so sorry that it has taken so long to get this document to you.  There are still a few small changes that may be coming but we will be sure to keep you upto date. The start of school and major breaks are set in stone and will not be changing.  Please feel free to plan your schedule around these dates. You can click on the above link to access the calendar or it can be found on our school website under the Parent Resources tab.  We also have two wonderful events coming up in the next few weeks.  We will be having and Open House as well as  Grandparents’ Day.  Both of these events will give us a chance to share our wonderful community with many people.

On Wednesday April 19th, Saint Francis will be having and Open House from 8:30 - 2.  If you know of anyone who would be interested in our school, please invite them to our open house.  We have so much to offer and want to see our community continue to grow.  As always thank you so much for all of the work you do to share our school with others.

On Friday May 5th, we will be celebrating Grandparents’ Day.  So many of our grandparents and loved ones are involved in the daily lives of our students.  We are so excited to be able to have them come and spend some time with their grandkids and see our great community in action. We are planning a fun and spiritual morning for all to enjoy.  If you have a grandparent or loved one that you would like to invite, please call or email (info@sfxvt.org) us their mailing address.

Have a great week,

Eric Becker

SPORTS NEWS:

4/1/17 (game 1): The SFX 8th graders traveled to Bridgeport, CT despite the snow and rain, after proudly qualifying for the 59th Annual New England CYO Basketball Tournament.  Game 1 in this single-elimination play was held at Holy Trinity Greek Church in Bridgeport against St. Patrick East Hampton of Norwich, CT (sporting green jerseys, of course).  What a game it was!  Both teams had early jitters, but the SFX Golden Angels got on the board first.  Norwich showed good ball movement although both teams had numerous nerve-driven fouls in the first quarter.  SFX went up 15-10 by QE1, with St. Patrick’s hanging tough with a strong showing at the foul line.  Pace of play hastened in the second quarter with Norwich coming out strong. Both teams netted late-quarter threes, Zac Roy for SFX,  and a buzzer beater for St. Patrick’s, keeping the score close at half at 25-22.  St. Patrick’s started strong in the second half, forcing several turnovers and taking the lead by one.  It was back-and-forth lead changes from here with high intensity of play.  After just a two point differential at the end of Q3, SFX played strong with solid rebounding and physical play.  Up by three with 29 second remaining in the game, St. Patrick’s took possession of the ball with a final chance to tie the game.  They took a three point attempt with one second left.  The ball hit the rim, rolled around in a seemingly slow-motion way, then slowly fell off the side.  SFX hung on for a 50-47 nail biting win!  Scoring was by led by strong underneath play of Max Gordon with 14, JJ Stockbridge with 13, Carson Corrigan added 11 and Zac Roy, 9.  Saladi Mayange netted 3.

(game 2): After an exciting game 1, SFX won the right to advance to afternoon play, this time at the Cardinal Shehan Center in downtown Bridgeport.  Their opponent was a tough St. Martha’s team of Hartford, CT.  St. Martha came out with quick play and full-court press.  They forced three quick turnovers by SFX and took a 6-0 lead before you could blink. St. Martha showed strong penetration underneath the hoop and moved the ball well.  SFX fell behind early with 11-21 deficit at the end of Q1.  The Golden Angels had a hard time with St. Martha’s full court press, although held relatively close, to within ten during the second quarter.  However, just when they would get close, St. Martha seemed to turned it on, going up 38-22 by half. In the second half, SFX appeared lethargic, possibly due too much fun at the hotel the night prior, with St. Martha forcing turnovers and showing solid rebounding.  SFX just couldn’t get a rhythm going, falling 46-69 to end their awesome season. Scoring was led again by Max Gordon (18), JJ Stockbridge and Zac Roy (9 each), Carson Corrigan (7), Deon Mitchell (4) and William Burke and Chris Prim (2 each).

A big congrats to the 8th grade boys!  The entire season they showed good game and sportsmanship, and made the SFX community proud!  As well, huge thanks to coach Jeff Brosseau for his leadership, guidance and dedication to the boys.
