Vol.1, No.3 - April 2017

Looking back, moving forward.

We would like to open the April newsletter by noting a special date this past month - March 16, the 80th anniversary of library services on St. Simons Island. The St. Simons Library was founded by Mrs. Abbie Fuller Graham with 50 books housed temporarily in the home of Captain and Mrs. J. C. Clark on Arnold Road. Soon after, County Commissioners agreed to house the library in the Casino under the sponsorship of the Cassina Garden Club. Additional materials for the move to the Casino were furnished by the National Youth Administration, the Works Project Administration, and local residents. You can view a timeline of the St. Simons library's history on our website.

Later this month on April 24, the St. Simons Island Public Library will host "In Celebration of Poetry: A Reading" in honor of Poetry Month this April. Four distinguished poets will read, including two local poets - Dennis Holmes and Steven Croft. We are also honored to have poets Stephen Corey, editor of The Georgia Review, and Shirley Plummer, a former resident of Saint Simons Island who now resides in Oregon. Lovers of poetry, and those who appreciate the beauty and power of language in general, will not want to miss this event.

Looking forward into May, avid readers and collectors should mark the dates of May 4 - 6 on their calendars for the Literary Guild of St. Simons Spring Book Sale. Proceeds from this sale directly benefit the St. Simons Island Public Library. More information about the sale and making donations is available on our website.

We cannot say enough thanks to the Friends of the Brunswick-Glynn County Library for all of the time and effort their members put into their Winter Book Sale, as well as operating the Friends Store. On St. Patrick's Day, the group donated $12,000 from their proceeds for books and programming to the Brunswick-Glynn County Library. Pictured are Diane Hughes, Book Sale Co-Chair, presenting a Shamrock Check to Lori Hull, Library Manager, supported by volunteers, Troup Nightingale, Chris Noyes, Mila Bouts, Alice Nightingale, Gloria Moreau, and Betsy Stafford.
